Russian Gear on the Canadian Troops?[edit]

A great movie that is completely ruined for the Canadian viewer. We Canuks all know Canadian WWII kit when we see it; we've all seen plenty of WWII war footage. Russian Helmets on Canadian troops? Where are the soup-bowl helmets? What else is historically wrong? I guess the real market for this film is Americans.

@user:Yekshemesh : I don't know why you cancelled my modification of The Forgotten Battle. If you look at the Battle of the Scheldt article and the maps, you will see that the Canadian army, joined by Will Sinclair, was on the other side of the river at the time. It only gained a foothold on the island thanks to the victory at Flessing's Causeway, which is recounted in the film.

It is therefore necessary to write (for example): "The British Airborne Soldiers later join Canadian Army forces advancing to the island of Walcheren", and not "The British Airborne Soldiers later join Canadian Army forces advancing on Walcheren island".

I am restoring my correction.

Dgreusard: To be clear, I am not disputing the historical facts you mentioned regarding the course of the battle; we both agree on this. I reverted your edits for the simple reason that the prior edit was already good English. There is no need to change "advancing on" to "advancing to". In other words, there is nothing to correct. In fact, I would argue that "advancing on" is even more precise usage, because the phrase carries the specific connotation of approaching some place or some thing with aggressive intent.

May I point you to the following definitions from leading dictionaries, with relevant sentence examples:

1. Merriam-Webster (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/advance%20on)

advance on: to approach usually in order to attack

Enemy soldiers are advancing on the city.

2. Collins Dictionary (https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/advance)

advance (foll by on): to move (towards) in a threatening manner

Reports from the country suggest that rebel forces are advancing on the capital.

advance (up)on (something or some place): To move forward or maneuver toward a location or goal, such as in a military offensive or a similarly coordinated march or effort.

The army advanced upon the enemy capital.

You seem to be of the understanding that "advancing on" in the context of the article means that the soldiers are already on Walcheren Island itself. I assure you this is not what "advancing on" means; rather, it signifies that the soldiers are approaching the island with the goal of capturing it.

One final point: on Wikipedia itself, "advancing on" is used overwhelmingly in articles dealing with military subjects – wars, battles and the like: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=%22advancing+on%22&title=Special%3ASearch&go=Go&ns0=1. On the other hand, "advancing to" is found mostly in articles where the subject matter is sports and/or other competitive events: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=%22advancing+to%22&title=Special%3ASearch&go=Go&ns0=1.

In view of all this, I hope you will appreciate that "advancing on" would be the more appropriate phrase here.

Plot tweak[edit]

Hi wikipedians, I made an amendment to the last paragraph of the plot to clarify the effect of this battle: opening the way to the port of Antwerp, which was in Allied hands, to shorten the distance to resupply the armies pushing towards Germany.
