START DATE[edit]

I'm pretty sure the Boys' Herald started in 1903. It was derived from the Boys' Friend which didn't start until 1895, and that only came about because of Alfred Harmsworth's money-making from the Halfpenny Marvel and Union Jack!

-That was me. Anyway, I beleive that this article has mashed together two publications. There was a short-lived "Boys Herald" in the 1870's, and then the new one, a stablemate to The Boys' Friend and The Boys' Realm, which began in 1903. It was that one which was subtitled "A Healthy Paper for Manly Boys". All three papers were tabloid sized and, at the beginning, virtually indentical with regards to contents. However as time went on the Realm became sports-oriented, the Herald hobby/craft-oriented and the Friend retained it's Boys' Own adventure style - though into the teens and twenties featured a lot more comedy stories than earlier issues. 81.129.121.85 (talk) 20:49, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
