Start[edit]

Am preparing first draft on word processor to limit number of saves and correctoions Mikereichold 20:13, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The next step will be to add sections for each of the three major divisions with subsections for each story plus The Silver Spike. The characterization and plot of the major divisions are such that characterization paragraphs can be dealt with at the section level.

Overall timelines, plot synopses and character portraits are available at the external links' sites or can be extracted by the wiki editor from the stories. Also, there is considerable information online that is at variance with portions of the stories' content, so gleaning is needed. Mikereichold 04:03, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

removed link[edit]

Removed (for the second time) an external link for "The Black Company - Age of Conan". It's a link to the forums of a guild for the MMORPG Age of Conan.

A guild for an unreleased MMO that has only 18 members registered on it's forums is hardly notable. Even if it were notable, it's not appropriate to have a link from this page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.232.92.116 (talk) 06:29, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed Changes to Character Listings[edit]

Some of the characters on the listing appear to be there twice. For example Murgen is in both the North and South sections. This is not in itself a problem, as the character Murgen does indeed appear in both the books of the North and of the South, but so does Croaker and he is only listed in the North section. Additionally, Lady appears only in the South section, which seems a bit odd as she does join the company when they are in the North. Additionally for her, she is a major character in the books of the North and as such might even deserve her own section. At any rate, I am not going to make these changes now, but I may if there are no objections after a few weeks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.205.209.119 (talk) 00:59, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds logical to me. If no more feedback comes after the few weeks please go ahead and make the changes. Blue Danube (talk) 02:48, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it's been some time anyway, but so long as you're actually trying to improve the article, just be bold and do so. If there is disagreement, there'll be a revert and/or discussion. IMHO (talk) 03:40, 22 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Also, would it not be logical to have Croaker as the first on each list, as he is the central protagonist? Also, anyone here who is a fan of Glen Cook, or of reading in general, should join WikiProjects Novels. There is a section here which we have dedicated to Fantasy, if that is your thing, as well as many other genres.

Influences[edit]

I've just finished reading the first Nero Wolfe book, having read that The Garrett Files was influenced by Rex Stout's series (and I have to thoroughly agree that it did) in that series' article. Anyone if any other works influenced Cook in the Black Company, particularly the first three books? IMHO (talk) 03:38, 22 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Word Disagreement[edit]

I was simply reading the article and noticed in the first few lines it says the storyline "follows The Black Company for 40 years of it's 500 year history." Under plot summary it reads "...for 40 years of it's 400 year history." I'm not sure which one is correct, but one is probably wrong. Dusty8807 (talk) 20:11, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

an error on the page[edit]

from the first paragraph:

through roughly forty years of its approximately five hundred year history.

then later, in the Plot Summary section:

through roughly forty years of its approximately four hundred year history.

sorry, i'm not sure which is correct...

Anyone familiar with these books care to add them to this list?[edit]

Types of mythological or fantastic beings in contemporary fiction is a page of, well, fantasy works (movie, TV, written, whatever) and the assorted mythological and/or fantastic critters they contain. This series would probably qualify. Anyone care to add it? Tamtrible (talk) 10:01, 26 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

New Novel?[edit]

I'm not sure if it would be notable to mention, but a new Black Company novel has appeared on Amazon, called Port of Shadows: A Chronicle of the Black Company and I'm wondering if it would be noteworthy to post something about. I'm looking for a source that isn't either an Amazon link or a post from the publisher, but so far I haven't found one. If I can find one, I'll add a new post to this section. Also apologies for any mistakes, I've edited the Fandom-type wikis but I don't have any experience with Wikipedia proper. --Praefect94 (talk) 11:47, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The Black Company Wiki external link[edit]

I can't imagine a better external link than the Wiki for this series, which has been around since 2012 and has had contributors from around the globe. It is a huge resource for the series and there is nothing else like it on the web... exactly the kind of thing readers here at Wikipedia may want to follow up on in another browser tab. I have reviewed WP:ELNO and cannot find any grounds for its erasure there. Blue Danube (talk) 16:05, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It falls well short of the 'substantial number of editors' exception outlined in ELNO#12. As per WP:ELBURDEN I am removing it unless and until there is consensus established for its inclusion. Nikkimaria (talk) 01:27, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please can you clarify what is a 'substantial number of editors'? Blue Danube (talk) 18:44, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There is no defined number but typically we look for 100+ active - ie having edited in the past month. This site appears to have 1. Nikkimaria (talk) 21:21, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How many wikis can possibly meet that arbitrary criterion? Wookiepedia, Memory Alpha, some handful of others. According to what you're saying, you will be erasing the link for Memory Alpha at the Star Trek article if the quantity of users there peters down? No, I do not believe you would: you'd be leaving it because the resource it represents is solid and not full of stubs. The same thing with the Black Company wiki. It has pages for virtually all characters and events and is a natural website to link here. Blue Danube (talk) 06:14, 18 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, there are relatively few wikis that meet that criterion; that's intentional, because they are exceptions rather than the rule. Nikkimaria (talk) 00:58, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure I understand... does this mean you will erase the link to Memory Alpha if the volume of editors peters off? Blue Danube (talk) 19:44, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Potentially so. Nikkimaria (talk) 01:54, 21 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Let us meet halfway, here. Currently we've got that external link to that fan-made maps site which has been rotting there since 2006. Those maps were made in MS Paint in 1999. Let that be replaced that with a link to the professionally-made map that appeared in the RPG. While it is hosted at the wiki, the text which appears in the External Links section to the link shall remain the same: "Black Company Maps". It can be treated as an updated link. Deal? Blue Danube (talk) 04:05, 18 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No deal. Nikkimaria (talk) 00:11, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You didn't reply for 20 days. You don't just get to swing in and say this. Blue Danube (talk) 13:36, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You didn't reply for more than double that. You also haven't met the burden for inclusion of the disputed link. Nikkimaria (talk) 20:14, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Different link. This is a direct one to the maps. Previously it was just a main page link to the wiki. You didn't dispute the map link. Blue Danube (talk) 03:06, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Same site, same guidelines, same burden. Nikkimaria (talk) 13:59, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Port of Shadows chronology[edit]

So Port of Shadows was listed in the Books of the North section as it supposedly takes place between The Black Company and Shadows Linger. However many fans(notably in the black company subreddit) think there is some kind of time travel shenanigans going on and it's not quite a true interquel. Someone moved it into the spin off section with The Silver Spike which I agree with, regardless of possible time fuckery if we're not going to list The Silver Spike in the books of the north when it chronologically takes place after The White Rose and is set in the north then we shouldn't have Port of Shadows up there either. I also edited the spin off section to note that it supposedly takes place between the first two books. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.136.17.108 (talk) 15:51, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
