No mention of the Tastykake boycott?[edit]

I'm amazed there is absolutely no mention of the successful Tastykake boycott of the 60's by civil rights leader Leon Sullivan in response to the company's practice of not hiring blacks for positions other than janitorial or menial labor. POV-check[edit]

Article appears to not conform to a NPOV in some sections, especially "Comfort Food". Statements such as "those who have moved to a state where Tastykakes are not available consider a gift of Tastykakes something to be shared with close family and friends, and possibly to be hoarded and saved for a special occasion", and "For those people who really need to have their Tastykakes, they can now buy them directly from the company website" sound like something either ripped off of the Tastykake website or inserted by somebody who works for Tastykake. I'm not sure of what to do in this situation, though; my knowledge of Wikipedia is rather limited. Héous 02:45, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree it sounds like something from a PR piece, but I know from personal experience (unfortunately no Wikipedia-suitable citation is available to me) that expatriots from the Tastykake marketing region do in fact give them as gifts and carry them long distances to bring them back to family and friends. I don't know that this phenomenon has been documented, but I've seen them carried to Chicago, Los Angeles, even to Hawaii. Pzavon 00:27, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Student Input[edit]

I am a student at West Chester University. As a member of History on the web in Spring of 2017, my assignment was to make improvements on the Tastykake wikipedia page. My contributions were the following: I added more varieties to the existing list. I decided to include a history section detailing the foundation of the company in Pittsburgh and the details that brought the company to Philadelphia. In that section I also included the company's logo creation and the origination of the name. Information on it's early sales and success including; product expansion and new machinery that assisted in increased production. I also added a section titled "1960's Boycott". This section discusses the boycott led by Reverend Leon Sullivan and others in the African American community who wanted to see that black employees were hired for more than menial positions with the company whose products were a big seller in the African American communities. I removed the bullet list under product history and wrote it in a paragraph form to allow it to flow more with the rest of the article. simultaneously I added a bit more information on Tastykakes products. Under the financial section I added some more history including the borrowing of 80 million dollars in taxpayer money used to fund the new South Philadelphia location. Finally, I removed the mascot section of the wikipedia page and inputted the information regarding Kirby the Krimpet under the Popular culture section. Product history correction[edit]

Kandy Kakes were originally Tandy Takes, not Tandy Kakes. I haven't been able to find anything to substantiate this, but I ate enough of them to know that the package, at least in the early to mid 1970s, was labeled "Tandy Takes". At the time, many people called them Tandy Kakes or even Kandy Kakes (before they actually became Kandy Kakes). That is probably the result of the word Take in the name not making any kind of common sense, and probably the reason for their renaming. I'm not making this correction because I don't have a source other than my own personal experience, but maybe somebody has an old package of Tandy Takes and could supply a photo.
