Name origin[edit]

The (1941) text at the Meertens site suggests indeed that the family name was derived from the ship. The other reference says that ships often were given the family name, giving the three brothers Tasman and their ships as an example. "Tasman" could easily have been an occupational surname (bag maker). Is there evidence that "tas" was a common name for a ship? It is not mentioned in any historical Dutch dictionary.
