Talent shows predate 1976 but a long way, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opportunity_Knocks_(UK_TV_series) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.225.80.50 (talk) 16:02, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The Music Show for Hurricane Sandy[edit]

Dedicating half the article to this show doesn't seem to make sense. Also, would be nice to have a deeper description of talent shows and their impact in north american society.

This article is almost completely missing the basic content it needs[edit]

We need coverage of:

  • History:
    • Live event talent shows before broadcasting (I presume these go back several centuries but I don't know how far. In my imagination there will have been a long running show called "By ye royale commande, pray gather all ye dunces in yonder tente and make them to prance for ye entertainment of YE KINGE. Ye befte prancing ninny shalle receive A Pigge and ye worft to be pelted with dung, alfo for ye entertainment of YE KINGE. Ceremonies to be prefented by ye very mafters of Ye Worfhipful Guild of Dunces themfeles, mifters Ant and Dec. Admiffion one groat." which is why somebody should look it up properly and not listen to anything I say.)
    • Radio talent shows
    • Early TV talent shows
    • The boom and bust in "structured reality" talent shows, with an explanation about what makes them different (i.e. the mawkish focus on backstory).
    • Any genuinely notable on-line talent shows.
  • Amateur talent shows as put on in schools, churches, theatres and the like.
  • Specific types of talent shows and the existence of general shows.
  • Methods for determining winners e.g. panels of judges, audience vote (e.g. clapometer), viewer write in (Yes. There were early shows where people had to send in a postcard to vote!), phone in, text/online/app voting etc.
  • Structure of contests: One off shows, knockout contests, elimination formats, etc.

Major global franchises should be mentioned but the list should be short. --DanielRigal (talk) 13:11, 29 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
