"Prince"[edit]

I'm moving the article name back to "Talal Arslan." We don't use "royal titles" in our article names per WP:MoS. See Abdullah I of Jordan or Faisal of Saudi Arabia for example. Since Arslan is not the prince or king of any state, "Talal Arslan" will suffice. --Al Ameer son (talk) 03:15, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Prince Talal Arslan → Talal Arslan – This is an honorific title that has no relevance in Lebanon. In their own clans, in this case the Druze community, they may be referred to "Prince" or "Emir" as a respect, but this individual is not actually a "Prince" in the legal sense. He is referred to even in Lebanese media and in the positions he holds in Lebanese Parliament and in the Lebanese government as just Talal Arslan. – Honorfic titles like Prince and Emir are not used in Wikipedia but instead we use their birth names. Titles like "emir" and "prince" are being mentioned within articles as a matter of courtesy and to allude to common usage within the family, in this case the Arslan family, but naming rules don't allow titles like Prince and Emir for those who do not hold actual emirates and principalities. Their are far higher placed Emires in Lebanon who actually ruled. But still we mention them by their actual names. For example Lebanese Emir Fakhr-al-Din ibn Maan (1572–April 13, 1635) is called Fakhr-al-Din II. Also Lebanese Emir Bashir al Shihabi II (1767–1850) is called Bashir Shihab II in Wikipedia noting that these were actual princes of their time. The Arslans who don't have an emirate nor a principality should not be named Princes and Emirs, but be identified by their birth names werldwayd (talk) 09:30, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support The nomination is well argued. Per WP:NCROY, actual royals and rulers have their titles in their titles sometimes (Pope Benedict XVI, Prince Harry of Wales), but theses cases seem to be only honorifics. Also note, from WP:NCROY, "There is no explicit convention for Middle Eastern countries; but contemporary monarchs with Arabic names are often treated much as this guideline would suggest: Mohammed V of Morocco, Abdullah II of Jordan, Abdullah of Saudi Arabia." --BDD (talk) 15:12, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Once again. Talal is the Emir of no sovereign territory and the title is solely honorific even if (as Tmamromeo suggests) the name "Emir" is on his ID card as well as those of the rest of the Arslan clan. However, I am unaware of any sources that mention this. I have moved the article back to the original title a total of four times now and it keeps getting moved back to the "Emir" version. Therefore, any move should be accompanied with a relatively tough move restriction. I imposed one previously blocking unregistered or new users from moving the page, but it looks like the editor who keeps reverting my edits in neither new or unregistered. --Al Ameer son (talk) 21:24, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Additional note Lebanon did have actual ruling Emirs (Arabic for princes). But even these high-ranking Emirs are referred to by their names. For example Emir Fakhr-al-Din ibn Maan al Kabeer (1572–1635) is named Fakhr-al-Din II. Wikipedia Arabic page abides by naming conventions by naming the page فخر الدين المعني الثاني No mention of Emir or Al Kabeer (The Great). Another great emir of Lebanon who actually ruled was Emir Bashir al Shababi II al Kabeer (1767-1850). He is named Bashir Shihab II. Our Arabic Wikipedia page abides by naming conventions as well بشير الثاني الشهابي with no mention of Emir either. All Arslan articles should revert to just-name basis without Emir or Prince or Princess. As far as Majid Arslan is concerned, there is no need to say Majid Arslan II. This is not an office holder of a continuous string of Princes to say I, II or III. Just Majid Arslan will do. If this will be confused with the supposed "Majid Arslan I", we don't have an article for Majid Arslan I anyway. If we will have a future article on the earlier Majid Arslan, we can revert to adding middle names and /or add disambiguation comments on top of both articles. werldwayd (talk) 06:17, 26 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
