This article needs to be cut back severely.

Most of the "abbreviations" listed here aren't complete abbreviations. Example : T is not an abbreviation for "Toronto" by itself -- Toronto is abbreviated with a T as part of a larger abbreviation, such as TTA for Toronto Transportation Authority. Most of the entries here are like that.

By all means, trim away. The guy who was digging in his heels against any trimming of this stuff (or even splitting it into separate articles) has been permanently banned for other reasons, so there shouldn't be any objections. Bryan 00:42, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Recent deletions by User:Strait[edit]

I think those were a good idea, and should not have been reverted. 90% or more of this article needed to be deleted. Most of what are presented as abbreviations aren't -- see my argument above. I'm going to put the deletions back for now, but this needs to be discussed on the talk page (here) as well. -- ArglebargleIV 04:56, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The abbreviations are sourced. Where is your proof that they aren't actually abbreviations?--Dnt23 05:51, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps I'm missing something, but where are the sources for these abbreviations? Is T really an abbreviation for twins? Either most of these need some sort of context added or they really need to go, as they're making this disambiguation page longer than a majority of the articles on en.wiki itself. thadius856talk|airports|neutrality 05:59, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Um. Ok. And? This is a disambiguation page. It is not an appropriate place for a list of abbreviations. Either they should be deleted, or split into another article, T (abbreviations), perhaps. Do you agree? --Strait 15:10, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd go farther -- if, as I suspect, most of these aren't "things which abbreviate to T" but, instead, "things which abbreviate to T but only part of a complete abbreviation", then those probably shouldn't even be in an abbreviations article. -- ArglebargleIV 17:51, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, I think I'll ask the question of you that I asked back then.
Is that a list of words which are abbreviated as 'T' by themselves, or a list of words which are abbreviated as T as part of a acronym? -- ArglebargleIV 12:38, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm perfectly comfortable erring to the side of deleting things. They can be put back later if someone comes along and decides that they are important. Remember that a dab page for "T" is supposed to contain entries that someone could reasonably hope to find by going to the entry for "T". It's not supposed to contain every conceivable T-related article. So even things like T-Mobile really don't need to be here, because nearly no one will search for just "T" if they want that. --Strait 14:58, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's very inconsiderate of you. I wouldn't mind moving it to "T (abbreviation)." But I would strongly encourage you again to read the thread referenced above. When you do, you will realize that these are only the most common T abbreviations! So it isn't every conceivable form, and even if it were, where did you get the idea that it's "supposed" to be a certain size??--Dnt23 07:59, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Please, please, please go read what a disambiguation page is for. It is to provide links to all of the pages which might have been named T. That's it. It has nothing to do with lists of abbreviations. If you want to fork the old version of this page to T (abbreviation), please do so and stop reverting my edits. --Strait 15:08, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Also, it does appear that all of Strait's deletions were NOT "T" abbreviations, they were lists of words/concepts that are abbreviated as "T" as part of a larger acronym. Those don't belong on a disambiguation page, and Strait was correct in removing them. Furthermore, I don't think Wikipedia needs a listing for every time the letter "T" occurs in an abbreviation, especially not on a "T" page. -- ArglebargleIV 15:51, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted back to the last version by Strait -- this is a disambiguation page, not a list of every word or phrase that is abbreviated with the letter T in every acronym that contains a T. Nor should it be that. -- ArglebargleIV 22:17, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dnt23, I'm happy to take this issue to formal Mediation if you push it. If I do that, you will lose because I am following the Wikipedia style guide and you are not. Alternatively, ArglebargleIV and I can continue reverting your edits. Since we can do this twice as fast as you without violating WP:3RR, you won't win that way either. Could you just stop? You have already said that you were willing to use T (abbreviation), so do so and leave this page alone. --Strait 03:15, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to say that we shouldn't get into a revert war over this -- tag-team reverts over content would violate the spirit of 3RR. However, I would recommend that we move to mediation or an RFC if this keeps up for much longer. -- ArglebargleIV 04:09, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup[edit]

Overall this page is in pretty good shape.  :) A few specific things that need work:

  • Per WP:MOSDAB there should only be one link per line.
  • I'd get rid of the redlinks
  • I'd also recommend creating a T (symbol) article and moving the items that are just "referred to as 'T'" out to that one.

For an example, see S (disambiguation) and S (symbol). The former's clean, the latter still needs work, but it shows roughly what I'm talking about. Thanks, and let me know if you have any questions? --Elonka 03:54, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    • I've taken a first shot at splitting between here and a new article T (symbol) as suggested. -- ArglebargleIV 15:41, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
