Merger?[edit]

It seems all of these surface lift articles are pretty similar and all pretty short. I don't see any great potential for expanding them... why not merge them all here? Jpp42 08:38, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

They probably would make a fine combined article, though the histories of each probably have not so much in common, and that would tend to make the combined article a bit unwieldy. The magic carpet seems less of a fit with the others: it seems like it should be the last to be folded in. —EncMstr 01:27, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I was wondering about surface lifts used in the early days of skiing that are not mentioned anywhere on Wiki? Would the history of their evolution from how lifts started to where they are now be relevent? Lifts I'm thinking of are ones I know of personally such as the Ski Escalator at Mt Baker or the Talley-Ho Skiboggan at Snoqualmie Pass. There were others in the east coast of train type lifts and so forth. Thoughts?Mrhyak (talk) 01:10, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal[edit]

Yes this page should be merged, I'm happy to do the merge if I'm asked to. For an explanation of every sort of ski lift, see the Types of ski lifts section on my Australian ski lift directory web page. --Bogong (talk) 01:46, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Bogong it'd be great if you could do the merge of Surface lift and Ski tow. That's a nice ski wiki at wikiski! Do you think it makes sense to merge also the platter, J/T bar, and magic carpet? By the way the context of this is that I'm trying to reorg the ski content in wikipedia over here please take a look ! --Cornellier (talk) 02:24, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There's definitely a need for a logical structure for the broadly ski related pages on this site. Individual pages are (mostly) fine, but they don't always relate well with pages on closely related subjects. So it's great that you have taken the task on.
My thoughts on the organisation of ski lifts are that individual pages on all the different types of lifts don't make much sense to a casual reader in isolation, so I think it might be better if there was a general page on ski lifts with a paragraph or two on each sort of lift. Then people could add links to pages dedicated to each sort of lift if they wished to elaborate on them further. If I end up doing the reorganisation of ski lift pages, I'd probably start with something broadly similar to the descriptions of different types of lifts on my Australian page (although obviously more broadly international and incorporating existing contributions) and then let other people edit and refine the descriptions of each sort of lift.
I'll leave things for a while in case other people wish to contribute to the discussion or they disagree with my proposal. Otherwise, just let me know when you want me to start. :)--Bogong (talk) 12:57, 25 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. I think an overview of surface lifts will be more useful than the current arrangement. Let's wait a bit and see. --Cornellier (talk) 03:13, 26 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
... one year later, I'm going to go ahead and merge surface lift with Ski_tow, Platter lift, J-bar, T-bar, rope tow, and magic carpet. All these pages have about half a dozen references between them. Cornellier (talk) 13:39, 29 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

J-bar[edit]

The section on T- and J-bar lifts suggests that they are similar except for the shape of the bar. I am old enough to have used J-bar lifts and I can tell you that they are fundamentally different from any T-bar lift I have ever used. Every T-bar lift I have ever used has had some sort of spring mechanism, either a rope on a spring-loaded spool or a coil spring built into the shaft of the tee. The J-bar lifts I have been on had no spring at all. The jay was a heavy metal bar connected to the overhead cable solely by a hinge. The swinging of the jay provided the only "give". Consequently J-bar lifts operated at lower speeds and had to be further slowed down by the operator to give younger skiers a chance of embarking. Jdthood (talk) 21:24, 1 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Merge with ski lift[edit]

See Talk:Ski_lift#Merge_with_Surface_lift for the discussion. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 11:18, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Only two people responded in two months, both opposed. I closed the merge proposal. - DavidWBrooks (talk) 21:08, 10 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
