I don't have any sources that follow Wikipedia guidelines, just my own experience. I use "notched" disks all the time, even today, on older systems that have specialized programs. The 5.25 floppies would tend to have bad sectors, but using SpinRite usually gets these sectors marked and unused/repaired. Even ScanDisk does this on older versions of Windows, too. For 3.5 floppies, I've never had a problem with "notched" floppies, even older 400K Mac disks, after a format by PC/MS-DOS and/or Windows to 1.44 MB (or in one case, 2.88 MB in a IBM PS/2 system). I do agree using FORMAT/U works. Again, I don't have any sources by the guidelines that can be used as citation. I'm NOT a published author or journalist. I'm a programmer.
