I am surprised that the reference to Baines's elevation causing unease among some referees has been deleted as the point is mentioned in the Chesterfield source.
Study of the Football League Handbooks confirms that until 2000 and Mark Clattenburg's promotion only two referees (Baines and Timmons) were promoted after just one year as assistants / linesmen. These handbooks are the most reliable source of data on the Referee and assitants Lists. 82.43.227.186 16:53, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that the editor who added the info to the article made it sound like historical speculation and/or opinion, which are definitely not allowed under current rules. If they had found a way of directly indicating the source of the info (perhaps by using the † device), it may have made it more acceptable.
You are of course at liberty to re-add the information, but I don't think its inclusion necessarily improves the article, so I won't be. Ref(chew)(do) 23:34, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
