Dates[edit]

Records show Hans Memling registered as a master with the Bruges guild of painters in 1467; two years earlier he bought citizenship in the city (necessary to join the guild), the year of Rogier van der Weyden's death with whom Memling almost certainly served an apprenticeship.

Nasty sentence structure (:) I know it is a WIP) but really what I wanted to point out is Rogier van der Weyden died in 1464, so either Memling bought the citizenship 3 years earlier or the year after van der Weyden's death. Bellemora (talk) 01:37, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I know it's nasty. I'm struggling a bit - haven't been really active and seem to have forgotten how to write. For a variety of reasons I've decided not to sandbox notes (which I usually do before writing), but I think I probably should. At any rate I've removed it for now and I'll check the sources and rework tomorrow - or whenever I get back here. Thanks for noting. Thanks too for the copyedits - it reads better. Much appreciated. Hello Victoria, I just re-copyedited a little section (I couldn't help myself) but I'll leave the article alone now as I can see you are still working on it and I'm sure it would be bloody annoying if I kept popping up to point out a typo mid-edit. If you would like me to copyedit when you've finished you can message me, otherwise I'll just wish you good luck. Bellemora (talk) 11:44, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thanks again! Sorry about being a bit cranky. I'd just said to myself the section I was working was really crappy, though I hit save anyway - but you were right to note the problems. And help is always welcome. I think this is only about half done and to be honest it wasn't something I'd really planned. I was interested in the hospital, watched a youtube vid, noticed the altarpiece and became interested. Would you by chance know whether Rogier van der Weyden's workshop was in Brussels or Bruges? The sources I have don't agree, and I guess that needs sorting. It's something I should know, but turns out I don't have much at hand re van der Weyden. Victoria (tk) 16:38, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Brussels. Pretty sure, no source though, it's just my general knowledge. (I didn't realise you were being cranky, my empathy settings haven't quite adjusted to Wikipedia levels yet) Belle (talk) 17:06, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I thought Brussels too, but read something that mentioned Bruges. Memling seems to have popped up in Bruges fairly soon after van der Weyden's death, so it got me thinking and then off on yet another tangent! Victoria (tk) 21:18, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
