This page should not be merged with Echocardiographer. If anything Echocardiographer is a sub-set of Sonographer. Sonographer should be a major topic. There are approxomately 50,000 Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS) world wide. "Diagnostic Medical Sonographer" is a profession recognized by the USA Department of Labor: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos273.htm

The terms Echocardiographer and Sonographer should not be merged, but they should be cross-referenced. Echocardiographers specifically study the heart using sonography and are also known as Cardiac Sonographers. The credential for Echocardiographer is the “Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer” (RDCS). There are three specific credentials that fall under the title of Echocardiographer: Fetal Echo, Pediatric Echo and Adult Echo… all use the RDCS as a credential.

Sonographers include a number of different specialties besides Echocardiographers, including: abdominal, OB/GYN, breast, and neuro… among others, none of whom necessarily ever look at hearts except for obstetrical sonographers who also study the fetal heart. Merge proposal[edit]
