Merge suggestion

I don't think this topic warrants its own Wikipedia article, but it doesn't belong in the Heliostat article, either (that article has a strictly terrestrial context, nothing to do with space-based technology). Solar Mirrors are not the same as Solar power Satellites

Solar Mirrors are not the same as Solar power Satellites. Please keep the pages separate. On the other hand the two pages should definitely be cross referenced and coordinated. I can see that there is some content on the Solar Mirror page which does not belong there and needs to be moved to the Solar Power Satellite page. Solar mirrors used on Earth

The scope of this article is not restricted to space applications, solar mirrors are already widely used on Earth, whereas they are not used in space at all right now. So rather than merging into a space solar power article, it would be more approriate to merge it into a more general solar power type article. I am surprised there is not more discussions about that. There is plenty of potential material for quite a large articleCharles 15:34, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

I agree that the solar mirror article should not be merged into a space-based article. I also agree that it would be better to merge it into a more general solar power article (and one which discusses all forms of solar power, not just electrical generation). However, if there is plenty of potential material for quite a large article, then perhaps the best solution would be not to merge this article at all. Solar Mirrors have many applications...

One application of solar mirrors that has been proposed is in the terraforming of Mars, if the solar mirrors were to be focused on the polar ice caps, they would heat up the planet, although the predicted cost is prohibitive. And these solar mirrors are quite different from what we usually call solar power satellites. They may not even be in orbit (statites rather than satellites) For maximum effect they would need to be rotated as to have heat on the caps continuously, so photovoltaic panels may be used to power movement. Correction

It can do - plenty have been made with silvered mylar film.

In some parts of the world, at some times. Not for most of us though.
