Does this article seem short to you? 05:16, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes, a picture or two showing a slap would be good.--172.164.78.170 21:17, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

cleanup-rewrite[edit]

I added this tag because this article, as it stands, totally sucks. Perhaps someone could make it better. --Xyzzyplugh 14:10, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

". . . totally sucks . . .", eh? I see the teenagers are at play again . . . --Mycroft.Holmz 04:51, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that we should even have an article on slapping. Jayorz12

And why the hell not!? Think about how prominent slapping is in movies and on TV!? It's has friggen cultural significance, dawg! --172.145.185.208 02:49, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Add some pictures, if anything!

I tried to add an article about the well-known 'bitch slap', but the dictatorial admins around here blocked the page from being recreated. --The Linguist 00:46, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There's some real creeps around in that regard that just delete legitimate creations for no acceptable or fair reason. The original philosophers who started encycolpedias wanted to categorize and catalogue human knowledge. These speedy deletors are holding knowledge back! --Mycroft.Holmz 05:52, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah the administrators are worse than Saddam, Fidel, Kim-Jong and all the evil Russian Czars combined.
Is it really fair and accurate to lump all of the Tsars in with the other modern dictators and to call them "evil"? Best, --164.107.92.120 01:57, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Examples in popular culture[edit]

This discussion started originally at [1], I've copied it here so that others can get involved. ~AFA ʢűčķ¿Ю 14:37, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I reverted your edit [2] on the article slap as I considered it not really encyclopaedic. I think if you had examples (with links to those examples) and references for your comment about real life, that would be better. Anyway, if you disagree with my revert, I'm more then happy to continue discussing it on the article webpage. ~AFA ʢűčķ¿Ю 10:55, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Slapping is featured in so many films (Primary Colors) and television shows (X Files), that I think most reader can read that statement and have at least one example come to mind, so that is it really necessary to cite something that no one would dispute as fact? --24.154.173.243 15:40, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well you know, I've heard of the X Files, but have never seen it, and I've never even heard of Primary Colors. But it isn't about that so much as I don't think the way it was written was appropriate. I'll see if I can rewrite it here...
"In many films and television programs, girls and women typically slap boys and men who offend them in some way, as occasionally occurs in real life."
Actually I can't think how. It just seems sexist if nothing else. I've only ever been slapped in real life (by someone who wasn't a direct family member) once (by my GF, who immediately regretted it apparently). I can't remember the last time I've seen someone being slapped on a TV show or a film.
One last thing, if it is so obvious that no one would dispute it, does it need to be in the article at all? Though I note that the sky is blue. ~AFA ʢűčķ¿Ю 21:32, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In the X Files, a woman slaps Mulder when she thinks he's husband and he's seeing someone else; in Primary Colors, the presidential candidate's wife slaps him after learning of his affair. And yes, I too was slapped by my girlfriend once! Even on the TV show 24 two or so weeks ago, one of the female characters slapped a guy who had drinking problems. I reckon if we made a list of films with slapping scenes (The Haunting, etc.), it would be incredibly extensive. My feeling is simply that if slapping has a culutural familiarity than this cultural familiarity bears mentioning, n'est-ce pas? --24.154.173.243 14:22, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I completely understand you point. As such, even though I really think that you should have links to scenes or to pages discussing the matter (or other references offline), I'm happy for you to put the information back. Though the article really does need a thorough going over with a brush and mop. ~AFA ʢűčķ¿Ю 14:43, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I might be off this computer for a few days, so I might do a quick search on a library computer or something to see if I can find any articles on slapping in films and television to make it more valid. Best, --24.154.173.243 15:10, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image[edit]

File:Shut up you white bitch! cropped.jpg is clearly inappropriate for any article. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 23:14, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously, the file name is offensive, but the image is the most clear one we have to illustrate the act of slapping; If you find a better one, please do replace. For example, an animated gif of the slapping which we now have as a movie still would be optimal. For the moment, however, we'll just have to live with the offensive filename. ☻☻☻Sithman VIII !!☻☻☻ 16:28, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Not only is the file name offensive but the image probably does not show a real slap. Take a look at the uncropped version on Commons. The dark triangle is shown to be a boy, perhaps fleeing the scene. The girls are crouched on the ground. The "slap" appears to be a comforting touch. The black girl's face shows no aggression. The white girl would not be crying at the instant of contact. The entire image is suspect and should be removed in my opinion. Cullen328 (talk) 16:32, 9 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If you can find a better one, that's great, but until you do, this one is staying. ☻☻☻Sithman VIII !!☻☻☻ 00:49, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If it were just offensive, I might be willing to leave it. As it's inappropriate, it's gone. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 01:07, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I must be missing the subtle distinction. Enlighten me, please. ☻☻☻Sithman VIII !!☻☻☻ 20:05, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
See Cullen328's comment; it's probably not a slap. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 20:22, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please comment on the uncropped image, Sithman. Cullen328 (talk) 21:18, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cultural Aspects[edit]

A slap in the face was / is considered to be extremely humiliating not only in India but also in Europe (e.g. the former German Chancellor Kiesinger was slapped in public by Holocaust-survivor Beate Klarsfeld). It was also a ritual to emphasize the importance of treaties, to "help" people remember, to show the relation between master and apprentice (one slap to start the apprenticeship, another when the apprentice became a journeyman), as a blessing etc. 2003:DF:3BC6:9600:546D:B28F:873A:3C41 (talk) 11:51, 18 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
