Is the Ramesh Menon link meant as a reference? I only enquire as I'm reading the book now. I'm not sure the following merits a link but its an entertaining look at the Ramayana from Sita's viewpoint: Sita Sings the Blues Khiradtalk 14:16, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

This should be moved to Sita

Because the "Devi" part is honorific. Wikipedia is a secular entity. See how it uses Muhammad and Jesus, not "Prophet Muhammad" or "Jesus Christ"--202.156.6.54 12:17, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Agreed. And it was Sita originally, perhaps moved because of the confusion with a company. Imc 16:17, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia quality standards

Salutations,

I am translating articles about India to the Portuguese Wikipedia. I was in course of translating the article about Sita. It seems complete, but there is a message at the top of the article saying that it doesn't meet Wikipedia's quality standards. I can't see what is wrong with the quality of the article; could someone explain it to me? What can I change about it to make it better, and then translate it?

Thanks in advance, —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sanscrit1234 (talkcontribs) 21:24, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

The biggest problem is that it's unsourced and tries to pass off various elements of Sita as "fact." Much has been written about Sita and there are a wide variety of beliefs about her. I don't think it's fair to take any single belief and treat it as fact. Instead, the article should discuss what various Ramayanas by various authors have said about Sita and what beliefs different people have developed about her. --Hnsampat 02:18, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

truly a farce if there ever was one

Think about it for a second. Ramma devotes all his time and energy to rescuing Sita from his enemies, and then casts her aside when one of his subjects questions if she maintained her fidelity while a captive of the rakshas simply to save face. I don't call that epic or even tragic, I call it a farce. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.99.12.34 (talk) 04:16, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

Lord Rama never for one second doubted Srimati Sita's fidelity. Yes, He banished Her to appease His subjects, but knowing all the while that Sita would be vindicated. He played a headgame with His subjects. When Sita returned, and She endured the trial by fire, Lord Rama still pretended to doubt Her. She was vindicated by not being touched by Lord Agni (fire) who was in on the game. Read the Ramayana. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.68.194.3 (talk) 20:05, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

Ethinic Group

From Maithili language. The name Maithili is derived from the word Mithila, an ancient kingdom of which King Janaka was the ruler (see Ramayana). Maithili is also one of the names of Sita, the wife of King Rama and daughter of King Janaka. Scholars in Mithila used Sanskrit for their literary work and Maithili was the language of the common folk (Abahatta).

From Mithila (region). Mithila holds a significant value in Hinduism as it is thought to be the birthplace of Sita, the wife of Rama.[1]

@ShotgunMavericks: The ethnic group "Maithil" is used for people speaking Maithili language. Until the Vedic period only Sanskrit was spoken in Mithila (please see Kingdom of the Videhas). Maithili is believed to be derived much later from Magadhi Prakrit or ardhamagahi. As the Maithili language was spoken in the area where Sita was born (or believed to be born), the native residents named the language after Her. As there is no source to prove that Sita herself spoke Maithili (and not Sanskrit), we should not add the ethnic group in info box. Jakichandan (talk) 03:07, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

By the way, incidentally the information which you have cited from the Mithila (region) page, in the last paragraph, was added my me in the article. Jakichandan (talk) 03:10, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

Birth Place of Sita and Narendra Modi

Present Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi revealed birthplace of Sita in Janakpur. Please replace Sitamarhi with Janakpur, Nepal. [1] [2][3][4][5][6]

The reference used saying Sitamarhi is birthplace is in itself claiming Sita was born in Janakpur . So it is not factual source. Please use factual source only . It is not about the country but the fact. Tulsirama (talk) 07:36, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

Recent edits regarding birthplace

@El C: Some sources like this describes present-day Sitamarhi district, Bihar, India to be the birthplace of Sita. While some other sources like this describes present-day Janakpur, Province No. 2, Nepal to be birthplace of Sita. What should we do here to maintain WP :NPOV. Some people believe Janakpur to be her birthplace while some others believe Sitamarhi district. Religion is a matter of personal believes, IMO. Thanks — Jakichandan (talk) 14:07, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

SITA IS A REVERED GODDESS IN HINDUISM . SHE IS WORSHIPPED IN ALMOST ALL RAM TEMPLES WITH HIM. SHE IS KNOWN FOR HER BEAUTY , SANCTITY AND DEVOTION . INFO BOX IMAGES ARE ONES WHICH GENERALLY GIVE COMPREHENSIVE INFO ABOUT CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PARTICULAR ARTICLE .THE CURRENT IMAGE IN INFOBOX OF THE GODDESS DOESNT GIVE COMPLETE INFO ABOUT HER ATTRIBUTES .. Infobox

Discuss here the addition of Statue image

in infobox done by User:Redtigerxyz since April 2022. Need Consesus for its addition in infobox.

Comment Honestly I agree it's a vulgar representation of a revered godess of a major world religion. We should put bit descent image in infobox like Moses, Zoroaster and countless other revered figures have. Also simply it being a 12 century statue as opposed to 19 century paiting is no valid argument; there is no wiki policy which state "the older the better". Plus the statue looks very dubious. Is it even Sita? or a random female figure just labelled Sita by the uploader? There is no caption visible in the photo by the museum stating it's identity, hence very dubious image.PersianV (talk) 22:39, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

LACMA recognizes it as Sita. There is nothing vulgar about it. There are various bare-chested ancient goddess icons worshipped in India. This is nothing, but WP:CENSORSHIP. I am okay with Ravi Varma lithograph too.--Redtigerxyz Talk 07:18, 10 July 2022 (UTC)

So,A goddess who is worshipped in almost all Vaishnav temples along with her husband ram in all parts of India is a mere character of a text.?? A goddess who is considered as supreme mother by hanuman and ram centric traditions is merely a character?? And at last infobox image must give complete idea about iconography of the article.is this the way she is perceived by indians??? Birth place of Sita

According to the epic Ramayana, Sita, the wife of Lord Rama, was born in the kingdom of Mithila. Mithila is believed to be located in present-day Nepal, near the border with India. Sita is often referred to as "Maithili," which signifies her connection to Mithila. Her birthplace is described as Janakpur, the capital city of Mithila, where she was found by King Janaka while plowing the fields. Krn1.618 (talk) 10:08, 16 June 2023 (UTC)

According to the Hindu Scriptures. When you read the real Valmiki Ramayana it clearly states Sita was born in Janakpur which is in present day Nepal. Rishabh.b.s (talk) 17:00, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
