Scottish?

Other than the accent, is there any documented support that shows that Shrek is Scottish? This would apply to an item listed under characteristics as well as the 'fictional scottish characters' category. Considering that the movies take place in a fantasy world where Scotland has not been proven to exist, I don't think that we can directly say that Shrek is, in fact, Scottish. If so, then the King would have to be listed as a "fictional english character", if we're basing this solely on the actor's chosen accent for the character. SpikeJones 13:44, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

As there were no objections, I removed the 'fictional scottish people' category. SpikeJones 13:45, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

triplets clarification

The "fact" tag is not about the triplets, but about their names. In case anyone was wondering. SpikeJones 14:58, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Shrek's brazilian voice actor

Just curious fact. In the brazilian dub, Shrek's voice was voiced by brazilian comedian Cláudio Besserman Vianna, more famous by the nickname "Bussunda". Bussunda died after voicing Shrek 1 and 2, so the 3rd movie was voiced by someone else. It'd be really creepy if he voiced only the first movie, just like Chris Farley did. Jim Cummings

I dont quite understand that bit about Jim Cummings voicing/singing Shrek as American... Mike Myers re-did the voice, so who is Jim Cummings and what did he have to do with anything?TR 07:42, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Brian d'Arcy James being mentioned

Why is it not ok to mention that Brian d'Arcy James plays Shrek in the musical? In the article about Princess Ariel it is mentioned that Sierra Boggess originated the role of Ariel.[1]

Then THAT article needs to be corrected as well. This is an article about the character, not about who plays the role in various entities. Info about who plays the roles should be included on the articles devoted to those productions, not on articles about the characters' personalities/story origins. SpikeJones (talk) 15:46, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
I respectfully dissagree. Brian d'Arcy James did portray Shrek in his first live action appearance, and should be mentioned in the section that lists his various voice actors. How is this any different than including Mike Myers? Xylogirl07 (talk) 15:38, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Wal-Mart

Why does it say that Wal-Mart hired Shrek and Donkey? It is physically impossible to hire fictional characters. Please clarify.--Mackdanny (talk) 02:43, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Shrek and Donkey actually are real, they are not "fictional characters." How would you like it if I went on to the Jesus article and told people that Jesus was a fictional character? Brogre4Life (talk) 04:48, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

Shrek and Donkey are fictional.Ma nam is geoffrey (talk) 19:24, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

c'mon guys! Even Donkey and Fiona have pictures of their characters included on their wikipedia pages. As the Star of all 3 movies, he should definately have some kind of image!! Xylogirl07 (talk) 15:39, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Based on Maurice Tillet; Really?

The article linked as source for the claim that the character was based on Maurice Tillet (http://slices-of-life.com/2008/02/26/meet-maurice-tillet-the-real-world-shrek/) doesn't seem very credible to me. It has no citations or other sources to back the claim up with, and most of it is about Maurice Tillet and photos comparing Shrek and him. It also surprises me that the article is from 2008, as the movie was released in 2001. I tried searching around for anything else supporting the claim and I could only find later articles that looked pretty much copy-pasted from the above article. Shne (talk) 18:31, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

I forgot to mention I removed the claim from the article Shne (talk) 19:10, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

On the page Maurice Tillet, section 'Influence', the following statement is made. Should that be added here too? Wiki-uk (talk) 17:08, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
"Some have speculated that Maurice's likeness was used as an influence in the DreamWorks film Shrek (2001) for the main character of the same name, but this rumor hasn't been confirmed.[1]"

Fictional Bio

Shrek [is] a large, green, physically intimidating ogre, described by Mike Myers as "a Scottish guy who's lived in Scarborough for 40 years".

I think the Scarborough in question is much more likely to be the Canadian one, where Myers is from, rather than the English seaside town. Clavdia chauchat (talk) 13:05, 31 August 2013 (UTC)

Yeah I think so to. Makes a lot more sense.--English Bobby (talk) 16:33, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

"Fictional" character

I take issue with Shrek being called a "fictional" character. Although most people don't believe in Shrek, many do. I have accepted Shrek into my life and would like him to be treated with the same respect as other religious figures such as Vishnu and Jesus. Shrek is Love. Shrek is Life. Title?

Since Shrek marries Princess Fiona, is he considered a prince? -- Willthacheerleader18 (talk) 20:29, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

why would he? In the uk only the son of the monarch is automatically a prince, anyone else needs the title being given to the, buy the monarch. That's why Princess Anne's children don't have it. GimliDotNet (talk) 05:10, 28 September 2015 (UTC)

Status as an internet meme

So in recent years, Shrek has gained notoriety as a cultural phenomenon many internet cultures tend to joke about. There is a Wikipedia page here here on the subject, but there is no mention of it on this page. Is it intentionally segregated, or should it be integrated? 72.80.116.51 (talk) 05:59, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

On the Princess Fiona page, the infobox shows her as an ogre and human. Shrek was briefly human in Shrek 2. Can you please add a picture of Shrek when he is human? If none is uploaded to Wikipedia, can you please upload one? 2601:183:101:58D0:C1D4:217:DECE:AA1F (talk) 20:43, 28 May 2018 (UTC)

Shrek's Birthday

So I would like to add Shrek's birthday in to this page.

From Shrek the Musical we know he was sent away on his 7th Birthday in this scene, Fiona is also shown on the way to her castle. So they were sent away on the same day.

  • "Now you're seven

So it's time to go away" (Tesori, J. & Abaire, D.L.. 2007)

In "I think I got you beat" Shrek states it was his birthday again, whilest Fiona mentions she was sent away on Christmas Eve.

  • "It was my birthday

I was sent away on Christmas Eve" (Tesori, J. & Abaire, D. L.. 2007)

This means Shrek's Birthday is December 24th.

I feel this should be included on the page for those curious.

I would like to edit this page to alter the category "Film characters introduced in 1990" to "Literary characters introduced in 1990" because Shrek as I would like to see originated as a literary character introduced by William Steig in his 1990 children's book Shrek!. Shrek's "Scottish" accent

I think there should be an explanation that Shrek's "Scottish" accent isn't really Scottish. To a Scottish person (or anyone who's been to Scotland) it doesn't sound like any kind of real Scottish accent. It mixes various inflections from several different Scottish accents, but doesn't use them in the way any one single Scottish speaker would. Like a Weegie saying "ken" or a Fifer saying "wean". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A01:4B00:87FF:9B00:FCB6:5359:88BB:BDA3 (talk) 09:47, 11 September 2020 (UTC)

In the section marked off for family, it mentions Shrek's unnamed father, however we do have a bit more information than that. Whilst we haven't been given his parents names, the musical shows both of Shrek's parents kicking him out of the house. We're able to learn from that source that Shrek's mother is still alive, and should be categorized on this list as well as his mother. Ecshrekutive (talk) 17:09, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

The cost of re-recording

Should there be mention that, when Myers re-recorded his dialogue to give Shrek a Scottish accent, he did it for free?[1]151.132.206.250 (talk) 13:58, 9 August 2022 (UTC) <reflist /> 151.132.206.250 (talk) 13:58, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
