Model link[edit]

I took out the wiki-link for model because there doesn't seem to be a page that matches the sense of the word as it is being used here. The closest is Model (abstract) but that doesn't seem right. Model (person) is clearly wrong. <nowiki></nowiki> — [[User:Edwinstearns|Edwin Stearns]] | [[User talk:Edwinstearns|Talk]] 15:48, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The article still ought mention the notion of model. The literal translation of shihan is something like "model exponent". Model/example is the meaning of the second kanji and was additionally implied in the first (exemplar/model/expert/teacher/army). It's also worth mentioning relevent differences between Japanese and western culture: that the ideal study involves copying rather than innovating/critiquing (this often causes clashes for overseas uni students, has even been attributed to the different developmental process from concentrating on repetitive rote memorising kanji), that (perhaps due to Confucian influence) the active role is played more by the student (observing and immitating) rather than the teacher (disseminating/explaining), and that the teacher-student relationship is different (less compartmentalised, closer to live-in apprentice/servant, emulating before understanding). Hence the significance of identifying someone as a perfect model. For example, in aikido a shihan not only has proficiency in aikido (which is expected of all black belts to some level) and not only teaches aikido (as all sensei do), but does both in such a way that the shihan's life is supposed to be a model to other aikido devotees. The closest translation is probably "master", since (see [1]) this shares the basic implications of a teacher, particularly of the sword, and one to aspire toward. Shihan rank referenced in Tekken 5[edit]

This comes after the player achieves 5th dan. It seems Namco skipped the 6th-8th dan ranks. It's referenced in this game, the highest rank possible being Tekken Lord. I have achieved Shihan using Asuka Kazama, but just to let you know, the rank is referenced in the Arcade Mode in the PlayStation 2 version of the game. --D.F. Shihan status automatic at 6th Dan?[edit]

This is not necessarily the case. Within traditional aikido as governed by Hombu Dojo Japan, the Shihan title is distinct from the Dan grading system. Whilst most Japanese instructors of 6th Dan and above are indeed awarded the title of Shihan, this is not automatic nor always the case.

Tomohiro Mori is a present 6th Dan instructor without Shihan status. He is a Shidoin (senior instructor.

I will make the amendment if no objections are raised.
