There is an ancient community in Sri Lanka called the Colombo Chetties which also traces its ancestry to sethis in the Benares and Coorg areas The late President J R Jayawardena too belonged to this clan so are the Lamkarna Dynasty which ruled Sri Lankan for 350 years. a more detailed account could be had from the Google serch under The Colombo Chetties written by me.

More info in this regard will be greatly appreciated, also could someone tell me if these clans are connected. ?

The Sethi's are definitely NOT connected with the Chetties, because the Sethi's trace their ancestry with indo-sycthian's from the region of North Afghanistan and Eastern Iran. Where as the Chetties belong to the Vaisya Caste, and trace their ancestry with the Tamils,

The Ricky Sethi's community link is specific to his family. I don't think it should be listed. --Firehazrd (talk) 19:29, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request to include Sethi as jatt community[edit]

pls as i saw that users "Vigyani" and "Sigma bot" are not of this view, so please correct the information provided on wikipediau. Devil badshah (talk) 16:31, 8 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

First you should stop creating new accounts. That is against wikipedia policies. Please read WP:SOCK. 2nd Sigma bot is not a real user, it is just a computer program. 3rd, as I have been telling you via edit summaries, you need to bring reference about the fact you state. Everything on WP is verifiable. Please read WP:VER. It is not that I am against your view about Sethi as Jatt community, but how do I know that it is correct, how do I know that you are not lying.--Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 16:50, 8 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sethi,(ਸੇਥੀ) also known as Seti or Sathi is a common surname among Jat Sikh clans of the Punjabi and Rajasthani people. Although this gotra of jatt clan has similar spell with Sethi clan of khatri sikhs who adapted Sikhism during the 18th and 19th centuries and originally followed Hinduism. Both are entirely different gotras although they have similar spell, jatt clan being called as ਸੇਥੀ whereas khatri sikh clan being called as ਸੇਠੀ.

According to Major A.E. Barstow, Sethi were very good soldiers due to the influence of Sikhism, and possessed more of a marital status. Barstow further comments, that due to their diet and their fondness for wrestling (something encouraged and taught by Guru Angad to the Sikh people) and weightlifting, they possessed good physical attributes for soldiery. According to R. W. Falcon, Sethi Jat Sikhs (alongside other Sikhs) were seen as a good source for recruitment. According to Captain A. H. Bingley they were particularly loyal soldiers.

In Rajasthan and Malwa region of Punjab, there are many Sethis which are muslim jatts.

Sethi are a traditionally agricultural community in Northern India. Over the years, several sethi Jats abandoned agriculture in favour of urban jobs, and used their dominant economic and political status to claim higher social status. In Punjab (India), Sethi are associated with agricultural pursuits and land ownership. They often reside in the rural areas, and are economically influential in the state.

In addition to the conventional Sarva Khap Panchayat, there are regional Jat Mahasabhas affiliated to the All India Jat Mahasabha to organize and safeguard the interests of the community, which held its meeting at regional and national levels to take stock of their activities and devise practical ways and means for the amelioration of the community

vigyani bro i want to contact you how can i? another thing, as i live in punjab, i am sure and 100% that sethis are jatts.even my few close one are sethis and also jatts. now i dont know how can i provide a source. please help bro. Devil badshah (talk) 04:18, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, we can talk here only. But one thing, you do not need to create new section every time. You can indent your post/messages in the same section. For that you can click on the edit button close to each section or just click below the last message in a given discussion to add your response or reply.
  1. Now about Sethi's. Sethi's are both Jatt(Sikh) and Hindus, which is same with most of the Arora/Khatri castes. While I do now know personally any Jatt Sethi, I know some Hindu sethi's who are essential businessmen or bananiyas (shopkeeper). Sethi's in Malout are Hindus.--Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 04:44, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Now about adding the information to Wikipedia. The problem is that everything we add into Wikipedia should be verifiable i.e. it should have proper sources. Reason is while you and me can believe that Sethi are Jatt or Hindu etc. A person from a totally different area for example from Africa won't know this for sure. So when he will read on Wikipedia, he may want to verify the information. In simple words, just assume that someone from Canada says that Sethi's are not Jatt or Hindu, Sethi's are christian or something else (just an example). He may also say that I know some sethi's who are christians. So to resolve such situations wikipedia has made the rule or policy to that all the information on wikipedia should have valid sources.
  3. What are the sources. Sources are any newspaper report, any book, any survey done by a reputed agency for example a news published in Tribune, Ajit or Jagbani etc which says that Sethi belongs to this communities. When such a source is found, then that information can be added.
  4. Like you, I also want to add many facts and information to various wikipedia articles, which I believe to be true, but I can not added if I do not find any source to support my claim. So they I try to do google search, read newspapers, try to find books on the subject etc.
I hope above posts answers some of your questions. You can always more questions. A very useful to ask questions is WP:Teahouse, where plenty of experience editors are ready to help.--Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 04:44, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dear i am currently working as an e-affairs officer for gurudwaras. Someone brought to my notice that some information provided in wikipedia regarding some personalities(sikh), and castes have misinterpreted and are vandalizing sikh people's policies. Being a government official, and sticking to my duty, i will have to solve disputes, if any regarding the above subjects. So anything violating the above conditions is welcomed in Punjab High Court. Dear Sandhu, I understand that there are many inaccuracies in various articles related to Sikhs and I will be more then happy to help you in removing the mistakes. But please understand that by welcoming people to Punjab High Court, you are issuing a legal threat. Please read No legal threats, which is very strict policy of wikipedia and editors are quickly blocked for violating this policy. So you either delete the "Punjab high court" line you have written twice or comment at the bottom that I withdraw legal threat. --Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 06:09, 25 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Our holy book also desribes that sethi kalan which was earlier a group of villages had now disintegrated into many villages. Akash singh sandhu (talk) 06:14, 26 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can you present at least one such historical book?--Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 07:46, 26 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Gurbachan singh bhullar(professor at punjabi university) 2) "angrejaa duara ditta punjab da naksha" by giani satwant singh khalsa

i request you to create sethi page only for sikhs . because there are many sethi jaats which cant be establshed under 1 name for eg......there are sikh sethis who are jatts, pakistani sethis are muslim jatts,,there are rajasthani sethis also which are significant in the area and belong to jatt community. Similarly there are haryanvi sethis which are jaats. so i req u to create a new pahe for sikh sethi independent of hindu sethis. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gurpal cheema (talkcontribs) 04:24, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

i request you to create or let me create another page of sethi gotra for sikhs independently as the hindu sethis and sikh jatt sethis have no common ancient history . further i want you to remove the following para

""Origin Sethis originally followed Hinduism, however a significant number adapted Sikhism during the 18th and 19th centuries. This, and also because many Sethi families raised at least one Sikh son after the formation of the Khalsa. This resulted in family names being present in both Hindu and Sikh and Muslim communities worldwide.
