Variety trade paper reference

I read a report that Variety is going to start charging for viewing some portions of its online content next year, so in case the Variety web page link reference for the Ken Nolan $3 million scriptment article goes dead, I added the supporting quote from the article and the ref template can be converted to a journal template. 5Q5 (talk) 18:37, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Differ between word origin and concept origin

Currently, the article mixes the origin of scriptment as concept or phenomenon with the origins of the word "scriptment". The article would benefit from seeing this straightened out.

In particular, it is quite possible that scriptments were used even at the dawn of film-making. (I am mentioning the possibility, not stating a fact.) It would sense to investigate this.

As an aside, it can be disputed whether this article is a valid entry at all, or whether it should be replaced by a wiktionary article. 94.220.243.230 (talk) 20:00, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

I did some revising in the intro. Regarding prior use in the history of filmmaking, I can't recall any published mention of "script-like treatments" or such re being sold, used to greenlight a movie, used to shoot a movie, etc., before modern use, but your point is a good one. We should be vigilent when reading historical accounts of old film production to see if there is any mention of anything similar. As for being worthy of article status, this is one of the more developed and referenced articles on filmmaking elements and processes, compared with screenplay, teleplay, spec script, etc. and I would recommend keeping it. 5Q5 (talk) 16:21, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

I found this alleged earlier use in a Wikipedia article for an unreleased 1972 film The Day the Clown Cried that was to star and be directed by Jerry Lewis, but it is unreferenced and there is no supporting mention elswhere online that isn't derived from the Google article.
