Of Iranian descent?[edit]

I have heard that she is of Iranian descent? Any one who can confirm that? Her surname is 100% Persian and as far as I know 'real' Arab's would kill themselves with such an Ajami surname... I will try to find some sources as well regarding this.LouisAragon (talk) 13:47, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not necessarily of Iranian descent[edit]

Good observation Louis Aragon! Her name is distinctly Persian, no question about that. I initially added the category "Iraqi People Of Iranian Descent" as I thought the Ajami roots were undeniable. But then I searched a little and found interesting stuff on the history of the word "Shahbandar". Under the Safavids rule in Persia, Shāhbandar was the functionary in charge of collecting the tolls in Bandar Abbas, the largest of the Persian Gulf ports. Later it became synonymous with "Port Official" and got into widespread use in adjoining territories and was known as far as the shores of the Indian Ocean and later the Ottomans picked it up as "The official who represented the interests of the Turkish merchants operating within Persia". So it is historically associated with a marine occupation and the Shahbandar didn't necessarily have to be Persian. It was purely a political post. Nowadays it is an obsolete word, but there are many people with this surname in the Muslim world who have no obvious ties to Iran. One famous example is Abd al-Rahman Shahbandar, the prominent Syrian nationalist. The other is the Iraqi ex-MP Izzat al-Shahbandar. These surnames are probably reminiscent of the Ottoman period or before that when this word was in popular use in the Persian Gulf. Omid.espero (talk) 20:05, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
