White Ensign

Went to see the SS Great Britain yesterday. I was suprised to see that she's flying the White Ensign. I thought this was reserved to Royal Navy ships. Can anyone shed any light on this? KingStrato 17:02, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

I got a nice response from the curator of the ss GB. Question answered. - KingStrato 11:26, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Capitalisation

Why is the ship's name sometimes written as "SS Great Britain" (i.e. with "SS" in capitals) and other times as "ss Great Britain" (i.e. with "ss" in lower case) ? DH85868993 (talk) 09:34, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

They all seem to have been changed to "SS" now. DH85868993 (talk) 11:43, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
I think this has happened the wrong way round. The official website uses 'ss' in lower case. Also, all signs around Bristol are written 'ss Great Britain' (sorry, no link to back that up). Can/should they all be converted to 'ss'?
The "SS" is an abbreviation (originally for "Screw Steamer") and as-such should always be capitalised. Other usage, such as on the signs mentioned, is incorrect.
IIRC, the designation, along with "PS", "MV", "MS", etc., was originally devised by Lloyd's of London for insurance classification purposes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.29.18.184 (talk) 19:40, 28 April 2015 (UTC)
