I don't understand how having a Scottish accent could cause the mispronunciation of Rapata as Ropata. --Angr/tɔk mi 15:31, 30 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't either, but that is what the history books say. It may well be that Donald McLean thought he was saying Rapata but his listeners heard something different. In fact thinking about the vagaries of Scottish and Maori pronounciation I am quite surprised that between them they managed to get the consonants more or less correct. ping 08:06, 31 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This is a very nicely written detailed article, but I've no idea as to its veracity without source material. NZ Dictionary of Biography? Some other publication about Wahawaha? A further reading or bibliography section would be fantastic.
