Length[edit]

The Album on which it originally appears, Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash has the running time as 2:38, but this article states its running length as 2:45... so which is it? Thanks Lue3378 06:40, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why would you assume all versions would have the same running time? (see AMG page for the song [1]). -MrFizyx 03:30, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:RingOfFireTheBestOfJohnnyCash.jpg[edit]

Image:RingOfFireTheBestOfJohnnyCash.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Gonorrhea[edit]

Where is the evidence for the ludicrous assertion that Rosanne Cash channeled her father who confirms that the song refers to coping with the STD? Mrpaulin (talk) 17:07, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

song/poem reference[edit]

Can anyone fix the reference to this? I just can't make it show up right, and it's a great reference.

Shamrock Rovers F.C.[edit]

I challenge the claim that "Ring of Fire" was adopted Shamrock Rovers F.C. in 1994. Please provide a direct quotation from the material cited in support of this statement. "If a reliable source is not readily available (e.g., freely accessible online), the editor inserting or restoring the challenged material should be able to provide page numbers and/or direct quotes from the original text supporting the material, upon request." Dynablaster (talk) 17:34, 19 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The required citation was added by Albert.white on 19/10/08. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.40.186.55 (talk) 02:07, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Because of the dubious way in which this claim was referenced originally, I would like to see a direct quote from the aforementioned source in support of the full statement, as per WP:VERIFY. Dynablaster (talk) 02:14, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've had my eye on this situation and agree that there are concerns about the referencing given the circumstances. If there is truth to the assertion then surely a better source can be found. I shall also be having a look at the book's availability to check myself. User:Albert White seems unusually unforthcoming in regards to this issue so, verging on a lack of good faith, I would like to assure that the citation in accurate before reinserting the material. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 20:13, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing dubious about the Rovers reference. The book is legitimate. The song is part of Rovers folklore since 1994. What part of liverpool are you from dynaman? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.71.1.165 (talk) 12:52, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:BURDEN and kindly provide pages numbers and quotes. Thankyou. Dynablaster (talk) 12:59, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The same user has supplied, on two separate occasions, a reference that did not support the claim in the main body. It is not unreasonable to ask for page numbers and a direct quote from this latest source. The relevant Wikipedia guideline on this issue clearly says that editors must provide as much detail as possible when material is challenged. Dynablaster (talk) 21:36, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Requested page numbers and quotation provided. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.45.95.0 (talk) 14:05, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Adam Lambert[edit]

I would recommend not putting this version in the article. He is only a contestant, of no previous note, in a current talent show. If he goes on to bigger things and releases a single of the cover then we should put it in. Sillyfolkboy (talk) (edits) 19:14, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. The guy has great potential but Idol and X-Factor covers do meet the notability threshold. Dynablaster (talk) 19:44, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It did receive coverage in the NY Times and, about a month after the performance, Lambert's performance was at #87 on iTunes for sales of songs and #15 for videos. Seems at least notable enough to mention that he performed it. ~PescoSo saywe all 06:41, 1 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't it time Adam got an official mention in here? ~Glam Nation Live~ with his cover of "Ring of Fire" has been out since 2011

– According to Chrisrus (talk): "As you may know, in the English-speaking word, Ring of Fire is first and foremost a Johnny Cash song by his wife, June Carter." Source -- 188.30.24.82 (talk) 17:41, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Don't see any great need for the change; probably simplest just to leave things alone... AnonMoos (talk) 19:40, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose: The Cash song is may be better-known than everything on the page with the exception of the Pacific Ring of Fire. It's a geology term but very well known even outside the field—a search on Google News brings up quite a few recent articles talking about the "Ring of Fire" in the context of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. These two uses—the song and the geology term—should probably both be brought up to the top of the article. —Neil 23:35, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done. 188.30.24.82 (talk) 00:29, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks! I think this is reasonable compromise. —Neil 01:38, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Speedy close: WP:POINTy and bad faith nomination. The nominator is repeatedly editing the disambig page to "demote" the long-standing first-listed topic. Since his actions there appear to represent a belief completely different from his nomination here, and because said nomination contains no policy or guidelines-based reason for the move, only a quote from the person he's reverting and arguing with, one has to see this as a filibustering his own sarcastic bill move. 84.203.36.42 (talk) 00:07, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong oppose "Ring of Fire" should redirect to Pacific Ring of Fire as the primary topic -- 65.92.180.137 (talk) 01:05, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As The Ring of Fire already does. 188.30.24.82 (talk) 01:48, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong oppose The Pacific Ring of Fire is extremely well-known. It is a universal term in geology that is taught even at the elementary school level in the US. ceranthor 02:47, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • How well known is the song, including among people who do not follow pop music? It is likely to be as ephemeral as most pop music. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 10:28, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Not primary. The Pacific Ring of Fire is just as well-known. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:19, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. The Pacific Ring of Fire is more notable and likely better known around the world. I would add that I created this article (the article on the song), and thought about this in titling it in the first place. bd2412 T 18:23, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per all the good reasons already stated. One question for the nominator, "What is the harm in having the word (song} in the title of an article about a song that offends you so much?" --Richhoncho (talk) 19:20, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support the Pacific Ring of Fire is always referred to by its full name. Hot Stop (Talk) 13:46, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Not always - see for example http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/glossary/?termID=150 - and not even most of the time, if its use in WP articles is anything to go by. 188.30.24.82 (talk) 14:16, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In fact, frequently not. [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]. bd2412 T 14:38, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. We only need to distinguish between other articles that might use this name. There is no reason to believe that any other article would have this name. If anyone thinks that someone could be looking for pacific rim of fire a hatnote will take care of that, but even that might not be necessary. Apteva (talk) 15:48, 14 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, in a roundabout way. First, it should be proposed that Pacific Ring of Fire move to Ring of Fire. If that proposal fails, then the move being proposed here should be re-proposed. 92.40.242.7 (talk) 19:40, 14 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No one here is proposing that the song being at a disambiguated title is in any way contingent on Pacific Ring of Fire being the primary topic of this title. The proposition is that the term, "Ring of Fire", is ambiguous. A failed effort to move Pacific Ring of Fire to Ring of Fire would merely underscore this ambiguity, and would not justify wasting the effort involved in another discussion as to the song. bd2412 T 20:01, 14 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose this proposed move increases ambiguity for the reader, and should never be encouraged. -- Ohconfucius ping / poke 08:22, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

Hatnote[edit]

Shouldn't there be a hatnote that says "...for the Pacific Ring of Fire...", and "...other uses, see (disambig)..."? Chrisrus (talk) 14:16, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As the dab page only lists one song, and this article name couldn't be confused with any of the others, no. See WP:DLINKS#Usage guidelines. 188.30.24.82 (talk) 17:24, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Authorship[edit]

I found this somewhat interesting[1], though I was pulled in with the headline: Ring of Fire: Written About Johnny Cash or June Carter's Vagina. You Be the Judge the attributed quotes about the fishing trip authoring session seem like they have a place in the article.  little green rosetta(talk)

Dispute RE: the Producer of Johnny Cash's "Ring Of Fire"[edit]

The Wiki article for Jack Clement states that he is the producer of the 1963 recording of Johnny Cash's recording of "Ring Of Fire" for Sun Records. This Wiki article titled: "Ring Of Fire" shows an insert on the right with a picture of Johnny Cash with factual information included; one of those facts being the name of the producer. Don Law is listed as the producer but I associate Don Law with Columbia Records and my understanding is that Jack Clement recorded Johnny's version while Johnny was still with Sun Records. Could somebody please clear up this discrepancy? 184.76.56.97 (talk) 06:44, 2 August 2013 (UTC)JSJR 812013[reply]

Second lede paragraph...[edit]

...opens "The song was recorded on March 25, 1963, and became the biggest hit of Cash's career..." but "A Boy Named Sue" was his biggest mainstream hit reaching #2 on the main chart (Ring of Fire reached #1 on the country chart, and (I gather) stayed at #1 on that chart for longer than any of his several other #1 country charts, but only got to #17 on the main chart. So I'm skeptical about this sentence. Herostratus (talk) 22:43, 22 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No mention of Ray Charles[edit]

How is there no mention of Ray Charles at all in the article? Johnny Cash himself bought enough of Ray's version to have him on Johnny's show to perform the song live. Misterdoe (talk) 01:45, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
