My Test Drive in 1979[edit]

I drove a 1964 Renault Caravelle in 1979. Lord, what a horrible piece of junk! If you are going to subject yourself to driving an old Renault, track down a Gordini, and don't be tempted by a Caravelle no matter what, unless you are going to plant geraniums in it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.127.3.249 (talk) 15:54, 22 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Aussie Teeth & Renault[edit]

The car was marketed in Australia as the Floride. At the time there was a raging and acrimonious debate as to whether or not to combat the country's bad child dental problems by adding Flouride to the water. You can guess the rest. Not used to hearing French, the Australians mis-pronounced the car's name as the "Renault Flouride", and no amount of French exasperation could change it. Flouride it remained. It attracted the single woman, who wanted a good looking car and did not need a 4 seater to pick up the kids from school. It was, by the standards of the day, a beautiful looking car, as you would expect from France, nothing like the USA muscle cars (Corvette, Mustang) nor the smooth but sporty UK cars (MG, Healy etc). It quickly became viewed as a "Girl's car" in Australia, a very male oriented country, so sales were disappointing. The ladies that I know loved it, and I never saw it used as a flower pot. All were imported from France, maybe the "Junk" was made in the USA, they are experts in that sort of planned obsolescence. I owned a Renault R8/1100 at the time, still the best car that I owned for the era.Historygypsy (talk) 15:43, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Correction I won't make - since the source may have the wrong info[edit]

I don't have access to the issue of Auto Plus that is Reference 4, and it may state that, "The "Floride" name was considered unsuitable for 49 of the 50 states of the USA" - but the USA had 48 states in 1958, when the Caravelle was launched.

I am not going to edit this article to say, "47 of the 48 states of the USA" - since the info has a reference, and I would need to find that reference or another reference. 208.67.205.54 (talk) 15:02, 31 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
