Verb or noun?[edit]

I want to know what regurgitate means not regurgitation

It is the verb meaning "to engage in the act of regurgitation; to surge or rush back, as liquids, gases, undigested food, etc." (Antonio.sierra 05:40, 8 May 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Merge proposal[edit]

This article is factually incorrect.

According to dictionary.com, regurgitation means:

1. the act of regurgitating.

2. voluntary or involuntary return of partly digested food from the stomach to the mouth.

3. Pathology. the reflux of blood through defective heart valve

Another one from American Heritage:

1. To rush or surge back.

2. To cause to pour back, especially to cast up partially digested food.

Vomiting and regurgitating are, given this context, blatant synonyms (Source: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=regurgitation&x=0&y=0).

I thus propose that we merge this article to Vomiting

Disagree. Despite the colloquial definitions in the dictionary, regurgitation refers to a specific behavior of birds, by which they feed partially-digested food to their young and also sometimes as part of courtship. As nurturing behavior, it is the bird equivalent of the mammalian lactation. If anything, this article needs to be expanded with further details and some pictures added. At any rate, it is not the same as vomiting, which birds also do in response to poison, and trust me, the output looks very different from regurgitated food. Disagree. Vomittng is a forceful and complex bodily reaction to poisons, bacteria, or viruses. Regurgitation is effortless, not accompanied by a feeling of unwellness, and not accompanied by retching or gagging. Picture of the day

A flesh-fly "blowing a bubble". The diet of the flesh-fly is very high in water content. The fly regurgitates the liquid portion of the food, holds it whilst evaporation reduces the water content, and then swallows a much more concentrated food meal without the water content. This continues until an appropriate amount of liquid is left for the fly.Photo: Fir0002
