Requested merger[edit]

Boundary delimitationRedistribution (election)

(See Wikipedia:Merging and moving pages for details on performing mergers.)

Rationale - Poorly-thought out creation of an article on an overlapping topic that focuses solely on the redundant aspects of the topic. Redistribution (election) is on teh general topic of Redistribution or electoral districts, while Redistricting covers US aspects of the topic, as several other article do for other nations. This author had sought to merge Redistribution (election) back into Redistricting, which were originally one article! - BilCat (talk) 22:12, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

Boundary Delimitaton[edit]

Boundary delimitation, as a term, is used by international organizations with a general purpose of describing the redrawing of boundaries based on any reasoning. On the other hand, both redistribution and redistricting are something commonly referring to in the context of mature democracies and based on the concentration of population in electoral districts.

I don't think Delimitation and Redistribution should be combined these are clearly two different concepts, compare the ways each is used in legal language. Often the redistribution is associated with census, population etc. see the Canada external link on redistribution whereas boundary delimitation is broad in it's use. I was only trying to make the association between these materials more discernible when changing the internal-links.

I proposed to merge redistricting with redistribution because 1) it is unreferenced and makes statements that don't help it, so the page will have to be parsed down. 2) By combining the two until their is an excess of information about the US would make the search for information about redistribution more centralized, I do agree the Australia page is not very good, as well. I see know that this may not have been a very smart proposal. Thank you for catching my flawed logic.

Unfortunately, as now written, Boundary delimitation appears to be solely about the process of re-drawing electoral districs, not about redrawing of boundaries based on any reasoning. That's why I think it will be better off here for now, to help expand this article. - BilCat (talk) 22:46, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps redistribution should be part of Boundary delimitation? really it is a sub category in the basic sense. I just started the article today because it supports another page I am working on, however I do think it is distinctly higher in a breadth of term hierarchy from what I have read. At this point, probably not. Compare [1] and [2] with [3]. Clearly, a lot more articles link to this one or to redistricting (some of which may be intended for this article). However, an article on Boundary delimitation is clearly needed eventually, and perhaps a stub could remain for now - I don't know. It depends on how much info on the general topic can be found, and is worth writing about. As long as we're the only two editors commenting on this, we can just decide together. Once others join in, it becomse more complicated. - BilCat (talk) 23:07, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think the lack of prominence of the term is caused by the UK/US centric nature of the English Wikipedia editors. I will continue to work on it in the coming weeks. Hopefully within the next two. It is high on my to-do list. SADADS (talk) 02:43, 11 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
