Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on December 21, 2008.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that masters of Singapore-registered ships are subject to a fine of S$1,000 if they do not hoist the Red Ensign (pictured) before entering or leaving port?

"Over design"?[edit]

Hi, Zscout370, good job creating this article (and, yes, I guess it deserves a "B" rating!). I note that the lead states: "The over design of the ensign is a modification of the national flag ..." What is an "over design"? Is this a special vexillological term? If not, I think it needs rephrasing because it doesn't make much sense in ordinary English. — Cheers, JackLee talk 19:55, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was typing this very late in the evening (maybe 1 or 2 am), and I was supposed to say "overall." User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 21:01, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah! :-) — Cheers, JackLee talk 05:05, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image of ensign in use[edit]

Have found a great photograph of the Red Ensign in use at Flickr. Hopefully the uploader will license it to us. — Cheers, JackLee talk 09:17, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I been also trying to find out if I can purchase an ensign to take photos. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 03:47, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You are pretty hardcore, aren't you? ;-) Regarding the photograph, the Flickr uploader retagged it with a "non-commercial" tag, so I've just sent an e-mail explaining to him why it needs to be tagged with either CC-BY-2.0 or CC-BY-SA-2.0. I hope he agrees! At some stage I will have to pop down to the National University of Singapore to do some extra research about the legislation relating to the ensign. — Cheers, JackLee talk 04:15, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gives me something else to put in the collection lah. Plus, I want to measure the flag itself, since I notice in the photo that flag seems to be more of a 2:3 ratio, even with the tears at the fly. I tried to email the flag makers, but the guys won't respond. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 04:23, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I noticed the difference in ratio too. But I wouldn't place too much weight on a single case. — Cheers, JackLee talk 05:36, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

True, but would improve better on what I previously had. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 05:41, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Whoops, accidentally overwrote your cropped version of the photograph with a higher-quality version of the original one provided by the Flickr uploader. I've created a separate file called "RedEnsignofSingapore-20051226-cropped.jpg"; feel free to recrop the higher-quality image and upload it over "RedEnsignofSingapore-20051226-cropped.jpg". — Cheers, JackLee talk 15:42, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fine by me, I am using the cropped version of the photo in the article now. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 02:12, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
