Requested move
"Record of Lodoss War" (without the "the") is the accepted English title, and used extensively on the page. There's even a section explaining that it's the accepted English title.

I just did some rewording of things in the page, but I didn't really bother with this paragraph:
"It follows the conventions and structures of the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game and follows a party of several main characters on a quest to preserve the "cursed island" of Lodoss. These characters conform to the basic character types of the original Dungeons & Dragons game as writers had originally played this game using Dungeons & Dragons but the copyright problem prevented them from publishing the original record of the game. The writers eventually came up with an improvised version with enough originalities to avoid the problem and this would eventually be sold under same title as a role-playing game. This caused number of flaws in the story line as characters had acted quite strangely if compared with the way they could have acted under the new rule."
I think I understand what the original author meant. It's true that Lodoss War has roots in the old D&D system. It seems apparent that the creators had a game (quest) made from D&D, but because they didn't own the copyright, they couldn't sell it. However, I can't find any information to substantiate that they actually created their own game (tabletop RPG) (called Lodoss–tō Senki, I would assume) based on the D&D system. Unless the author meant video game. In either case, this paragraph is terribly confusing and I think it should either be rewritten or removed. - Although Parn behaves like a paladin, being an archtypal knight in shining armor, I'd say no, since in RPGs paladins generally have supernatural powers such as healing and a limited number of spells. Parn, on the other hand, relies solely on his martial prowess. If "fighter" isn't descriptive enough, then I'd suggest knight, knight-errant, or Cavalier as alternatives.--Filby 01:29, 1 October 2005 (UTC)
- If anything, Parn seems to start as a Fighter, and eventually BECOMES either a Paladin or a Cavalier. Remember, he eventually uses what effectively was a Holy Avenger, even if it was only for a short time. - There's actually a feat that lets you "trick" weapons and wands and such into letting you believe you're an alignment you're not, which would have allowed him to use an Evil weapon even if he was a Paladin. - No, Lodoss was inspired by 1st or 2nd-Edititon AD&D. However, it's important to remember that the series is not D&D. In fact, the creator of Lodoss, Ryo Mizuno, created his own RPG system from which the campaigns that became Lodoss came, which was based on D&D but not the same. Despite what I may have said above about RPGs, I now think it's best not to force the descriptions of characters to conform to RPG classes and whatnot.--Filby 13:57, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

"Rhodes" and "Lodoss"
In the Japanese version of this article, it says that there is no connection between "Lodoss" and the island of Rhodes in the Aegean. What is the correct transliteration? Monsieurtode 03:23, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

Layout
All of the "[edit]" links are layered under Parn's description. Can someone fix this?

Suggestions
Heya,
First of all I'd like to say that this article's had a big improvement. I've got a few suggestions that might improve this article even more.
- I think we should make this page a "main page" and split the rest up into different articles, at least giving each series it's own page with it's own synopsis and character bio's.
- I also think that we should give these following Record of Lodoss War topics seperate article:
- Lodoss Island (with a map)
- Locations on Lodoss
- Gods of Lodoss
- Nations of Lodoss
- History of Lodoss (incl. a time-line)
We can make the RoLW-wiki a great thing if we keep expanding, and I'd love to contribute.

- Hello there, I've been adding to the Lodoss wiki a lot lately (as you can see from the new articles related, the expanded content, the content fixes, etc). I'm definitely working on getting up the new content, and your list does seem like a good idea, but it does pose a bit of an issue; it would be hard to find a non-infringing map of Lodoss as one is not provided with the Lodoss manga or DVDs. Perhaps one could be drawn up (after all, I'm pretty sure the map of Lodoss is just a re-drawn map of Australia) for this purpouse however. -Emhilradim 12:56, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

List of Record of Lodoss War episodes
I added in a new article, 'List of Record of Lodoss War episodes.'
I intend to fill it with descriptive (but not too descriptive) descriptions of the 40 episodes that comprise the first two series, but I've never seen Legend of Crysania, so I'll have to omit that particular series. -Emhilradim 13:36, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
Timeline
I found the timeline pretty difficult to read, so I turned it into a wikitable (like many timelines of real-life events on Wikipedia). I also added links within the article aswell as links to other articles where applicable (Parn, Deedlit, Ghim). I found that the use of italics in the timeline seems to have no underlying logic at all, but didn't know what would be best and didn't want to remove it altogether, so it's mostly kept like it was. The problem with the timeline as a table is that it interferes with the infobox (or rather, the other way around), unless two tables with different widths are created. That doesn't look very good, so is there any other way to make them coexist "peacefully"? --x-Flare-x{Talk) 13:02, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- What you do with the information I post is up to you. I'm only dressing up the wiki. If you want to completely re-word it, remove the italics, or put it on its own page, go for it. I'm just expanding the article and fixing the wrong/irrelevant data (for example: Parn being a Paladin is wrong). The opposing swords are enchanted swords (and the celestial blade is not a holy avenger -- magic swords have always been effective against the undead), and it doesn't take magical ability to utilize such a weapon. -Emhilradim 03:47, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
No Karla section?
It's a little odd that such a major character wouldn't be given her own section under "significant characters." She's only started every war in Lodoss for 500 years.. Kestrel 04:34, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
Character Section: Mess
No offense to anyone who worked on it, but I honestly think this section, as well as the "significant entities and locations" section, need a lot of work. I'm considering trying to make it a little easier to read, along the lines of the characters section of this page. Something like this format:
- Parn (パーン, Paan)
- Parn is a blah blah blah description goes here. Voiced by: Takeshi Kusao (OVA), Nobotushi Hayashi (Chronicles) (Japanese); Bill Timoney (English)
Since many characters have been voiced by many different people, that may present difficulties vis a vis formatting in the seiyuu section; I'm not quite happy with how it looks in my example. Also, I don't know the kanji or romaji for most of the characters' names, so I'll need some help with that. I'm also not sure how to categorize them; I'm thinking something like the following, based on order of appearance, alignment, and importance:
Good guys:
First party: Parn, Deed, Etoh, Slayn, Wood, Ghim
Second party: Leylia, Shiris, Orson, Maar
Third party: Spark, Little Neese, Garrack, etc.
The Six Heroes: Fahn, Beld, etc.
Other goodies: Kashue, Fianna, etc.
Bad guys: (all of 'em, since they're not split up into different groups/eras like the goodies; I'm not sure whether some former heroes, like Beld and Karla, should be listed twice or what.)
Other characters: (ditto)
Dragons: (ditto)
Gods: (ditto)
And so on. Locations would be spun off into their own section, too. I'll hold off on any sweeping changes before I get any input. Thoughts?--Filby 22:42, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
- I don't have any specific ideas on the subject at the moment other than that it sounds like a good idea. General cleanup
I've removed excessive italicization from the timeline and list of charas and will do the same for locations. It is not necessary to do this for character, place, and item names.
Also, proper names and titles need to be uniformly capitalized.

RoLW RPG?

- That's actually false. There was the original "Record of Lodoss War Companion" (near impossible to find now having been released on 1989. Uses d20 system, I think) which was created before "Sword World RPG" (1989, 2d6 system) or "Record of Lodoss War RPG" (1995) and is limited closely to what was actually present in the original novels. Later-released Sword World RPG uses the same world and greatly expanded the world, while making the system less "hero-oriented". Then, an expansion rule for Sword World that re-introduced the "hero" aspect was released. (There's now Sword World 2.0 which attempts to re-make the somewhat outdated original system into a more "modern" form. It's "different" for a lack of better words.) You can play this setting by Sword World RPG without a problem, unless you need play it "the right way".--Revth (talk) 06:37, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Contradiction
The first paragraph says that the work was originally created for Forcella (Sword World RPG). A later paragraph says it was created as Dungeons and Dragons replay. Neither of these statements has any reference. Ken Arromdee (talk) 21:39, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
- It's not really a contradiction - according to the afterword to the first novel, by Hitoshi Yasuda, Lodoss started as a generic RPG setting, which SNE Group used with various RPGs - he mentions D&D, Tunnels and Trolls, and RuneQuest. Since they wanted to promote tabletop (or, in Japanese, table talk) RPGs, which at the time (1986) were relatively unknown in Japan, they started the Lodoss replays, using Dungeons and Dragons rules, in Comptiq magazine. At the time Forcelia (or at least Lodoss) existed in some form, but the Sword World ruleset did not. I'll edit this citation into the article later, and see if I can't make the intro less ambiguous.
