Blacklisted Links Found on Quadrant roadway intersection[edit]

Woodward and Maple, Birmingham, MI[edit]

This intersection, with Peabody St. serving as the quadrant, was formerly among the list of quadrant intersections in the US. I don't believe it is appropriate because ...

  • Traffic from Woodward to Maple can also make a median left turn. Woodward Avenue has median ("Michigan") left turns all the way from Wayne County to Pontiac. Viewing the area on Google maps shows that there are turnarounds for left turns on Woodward, both north and south of the intersection with Maple. The one north of Maple, which is what the quadrant intersection would be replacing, is actually closer to Maple than the one south of Maple is.
  • Northbound from Woodward, traffic has to turn left on Brown, then right on Peabody before reaching Maple. This makes the situation more complicated than a simple quadrant intersection. It is really more of a case of where signs direct traffic than the way the intersection is laid out.
  • If Maple and Woodward is listed as a quadrant intersection, then surely Maple and Telegraph, just a few miles west in Bloomfield Township, should also be listed. Here there is an actual road that was constructed for quadrant turns, and still remains in use. I think it was there before median left turns were put in on Telegraph, ca. 1970, and I think that it might still merit inclusion in the list, though I grant that the availability of median left turns muddies the situation.

Real world examples/illustrations[edit]

The examples were recently removed, an edit I don't disagree with. Not so much because of the OR quality, but because linking to Google maps is hacky and low-quality content. What we can and should have is an actual illustration - an image right here on Wikipedia, whether that be a schematic map or satellite imagery of a real world quadrant roadway intersection. Thing is, any such picture needs to be sourced, and it needs to be legal.

Until such an image can be procured, please don't add any examples you've come up with yourself. Please don't just link off-site, and please don't add screenshots of Google Maps or something. CapnZapp (talk) 09:52, 10 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
