wikipedia is not a dictionary -- I suggest the removal of the first section. -- Tarquin hi While not strictly an encyclopaedia article, it could easily become one. The first section should certainly however be subsidiary to the more orthodox meaning of the term. user:sjc

And further the definition of the word and the remainder of the article has a very strong American ethnocentric bias and fails to take in the English history of the word, its association with pussy-willow & catkins, and plenty more besides. user:sjc

Barrison sisters

I don't see why the Barrison sisters are pictured here. The joke's not that funny. Ortolan88
No but it certainly puts the concept in context... user:sjc
I put that here as an illustration showing that the double entedre of the two meanings of the word "pussy" has been part of popular culture for over a century. I thought it an appropriate and not overly rude illustration of the concept. If others think otherwise, I won't be heartbroken if it's seen fit to remove it, as I've already given the Barrison Sisters an entry of their own. -- Infrogmation 16:48 Nov 13, 2002 (UTC)
I have no problems with it at all. I just hope the saddos don't neuter it or I'll be on the blower to EFF. Good post, btw, Infrogmation. user:sjc

I don't see why not to put the picture there, unless you can think of something better to illustrate the whole point of the article. But can we make it a bit smaller, possibly so small that it can be embedded into the text? --Eloquence 16:54 Nov 13, 2002 (UTC)

If you make it too small you won't be able to make out the detail. user:sjc
You mean you could no longer see the pussies? That would indeed be a shame. Perhaps a thumbnail is in order then. --Eloquence
If you like, you could edit the picture to show just one sister, or replace it with something like "Double entendre use of the cat verses the vulgar meaning of the term has been part of popular culture at least since the late 1800s (see for example Barrison Sisters." -- Infrogmation

I think a picture of Mrs. Slocum from Are you being served? would be a bit more up-to-date.

??? Who? Please elaborate. --Eloquence 17:20 Nov 13, 2002 (UTC)
Well, Mrs Slocum used the word as a verbal double entendre on the show a lot, but I don't think that a photo of her would illustrate the point. -- Infrogmation
Shall I put on smileys for the humor-impaired :=)? Ortolan88

A typical example of one of Mrs. Slocombe's "my pussy" double entendres from Are You Being Served? is:

Mrs. Slocombe: Mr. Singh, would you be good enough to go over to my flat, look through the letter-box, and if you see my pussy, drop a sardine on the mat?

DavidConrad 03:34, 2 August 2005 (UTC)

I changed obscenity to vulgarity since the former is a legal concept and the latter a (more appropriate) social concept. I also added some more precise etymological information. I removed the sentence stating that "The first recorded usage in this respect however is not until 1879" since I couldn't find any justification for it. I also removed cross-references to non-existent, dictionary type entries. Ortolan88

How about a list of famous pussies which could include Honor Blackman, Maud Adams and Ray Cooke and Vincent Pastore? Eclecticology

I don't think so, Maud was in one, but she wasn't one, and I have no idea who Ray Cooke is. Google turned up a flammability expert of that name complaining about government pussy-footing on standards, so you're down to two and it would just attract attention to no apparent benefit. Ortolan88
I didn't seriously expect anyone to go for the idea. Maud did play the role of Octopussy. Ray Cooke played "Pussy" in the 1938 movie King of the Newsboys in which Lew Ayres played the lead. Cheech Marin also played "Chet Pussy" in the 1996 movie From Dusk Till Dawn, an over the top horror-comedy. for quotes from that movie see http://us.imdb.com/Details?0116367 . How about Charles A. "Buddy" Post who played Pussy-Finger in The Tender Hour from 1927. Eclecticology
I forgot that Maud was twice a Bond girl, once Andrea once Octo.
But seriously folks, I obviously think there's nothing wrong with the existence of this page, but I do think there is something wrong with pushing it. Ortolan88

I've changed 'OED' to Oxford English Dictionary again. Trying to use abbreviations to save space reduces readability (especially for those who are trying to skim through an article). - Tobin Richard

What is the meaning of "see entry for more" following "Do You Want To See My Pussy?" Is this another double entendre? - RP

After seeing the Barrison sisters picture, I won't forget that the word 'pussy' has had its sexual connotations for more than a 100 years. I guess that gives it informative value.

Its a bit difficult to see their pussies with this size picture, and therefore the joke is lost~Can we have it bigger?!--Light current 12:49, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

Where's the pic ?

Any idea why User:The Cunctator removed the pic of the Barrison Sisters on 14 Nov 2002. His comment says "Don't need the picture twice" which doesn't make sense either. One discussion above shows that there was support for the pic. Jay 17:17, 4 Apr 2004 (UTC)

The picture of the Barrison Sisters is in the Barrison Sisters entry. It's not directly germane to the pussy entry. --The Cunctator

I feel the pic fits the context well, also I didn't see any opposition in the "Barrison sisters" discussion above. Hence I'm putting the pic back. (btw thanks to Cunctator for teaching me a new word !) Jay 09:03, 6 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Done! Jay 14:42, 23 Jun 2004 (UTC)
