Agreed. But in a way, all new employees are placed on "probation" uuupu

during the first few weeks with a company (for reasons stated in the article). Academic probation is usually given to a college student who is teetering on "flunking out" (that is, they had poor grades during a semester, and are given a semester to "shape up").
