Rotation constraint[edit]

This description and illustration fail to indicate the usual rotation constraint: either a pin in slot structure, or a non-cylindrical shaft mechanism, to keep the shaft from rotating with respect to the enclosure. It is also possible to prevent rotation, if both parts of the joint are constrained by other mechanisms in the attached actuated structures.
Although the constraint is practically unnecessary if the attachment of the actuated mechanism does not transfer or allow rotation, a cylindrical shaft inherently allows 2 degrees of freedom, and so is not 'prismatic'.

Electro-magnetic actuators[edit]

Hi Jameson

Is it worth mentioning electro-magnetic actuators like the ones used in testing car parts for vibration tables and the ones used for racing car test facilities to simulate on track bumps and corners ? some nice pics
