Shouldn't the article be titled "Prelim" instead of "Prelims"? or perhaps "Preliminary Examination"? 71.148.59.179 (talk) 00:34, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I broke the article into sections and removed the category tags. 71.148.59.179 (talk) 18:03, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is this article correctly categorized? The bulk of it is about the prelims/comps/quals in US universities, not UK universities or Oxford, in particular. Agrantx (talk) 05:29, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, why does Cornell get a section separate from US Universities? --TruthfulCynic 03:21, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's not necessarily a failure in the article, but I came here after reading all the strips on www.phdcomics.com (as a non-student), and I'm still not quite clear about the 'Quals' material on there. --Zorn (talk) 02:05, 5 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Article needs clearer distinction between the formal terms (preliminary, general, qualifying, comprehensive) and the nicknames (prelims, generals, quals, comps) that are often localisms of particular universities. The formal names of the exams should be treated as the primary concept.73.149.246.232 (talk) 08:47, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
