Gender disagreement[edit]

Potipherah is referred to as "she" in the part in which she is said to be the mother of Asenath (the text says that Asenath was the daughter of Potipherah, no gender implied either way). Then Potipherah is referred to as "he" when the meaning of the name is explained. Potiphar, who owned Joseph as a slave, was male.
