Character Names - sources

The default/official character names tidbits are actually pretty cool. Where is it posted/discovered that the original GB games initialized names were Nintendo and Sony? Also, are there corresponding default-in-memory names for the GBC and GBA games?

Promotional events

  • "There are no ways to obtain Mew without using a cheating device or obtaining it directly from Nintendo at promotional events (which are no longer ongoing in Japan). These events were Japan-only and were not hosted elsewhere."

This isn't true. I personally went to an event in The Netherlands where I got a Mew. It was pretty small and lame, though, with a distinct lack of people, so I don't really know how to change this.

Consoles?

This article is entitled "Pokemon Video Games", so theoretically it should also contain information on games such as "Pokemon Stadium" and "Pokemon Colloseum" (albeit separate from handheld section).

Pokémon video game series

Shouldn't this article be titled Pokémon video game series?. That name sounds a bit more logical. The way it is titled now, Pokémon (video games), makes you think that the article is about a number of video games all titled Pokémon. If you mean a third game with a relation to DP like Yellpw to Red and Blue, Crystal to Gold and Silver, and Emerald to Ruby and Saphire, then no. All I can tell you is that Giratina is probably going to be the version mascot.DarkGreen (talk) 22:53, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Main Series

I've noticed that Mystery Dungeon and Ranger have been included within the 'main series', I've always thought that Nintendo saw them as spin-offs. Unobtainable Pokemon

The "Unobtainable" Pokemon section makes little sense in this article. How are the Pokemon unobtainable if in the section it is explained how to obtain them in the games? SpigotMap 17:14, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Mew?

Just for the sake of history, and the fact that it is mentioned at later times, does anyone remember the period in the 90's where toys r us was giving out mews during the red/blue era? Glitches

I wouldn't call how the DS reacts when Diamond/Pearl is removed "fixing" a glitch; for any commercial DS game, removing it fires an interrupt that shuts down the system. --72.196.151.10 00:29, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

I found a glitch in Diamond/Pearl! I went to the shard person west of Pastoria and I had more than 10 shards of every colour except for Blue. But when I tried to trade shards for TMs, blue shards was on the list! I got a rain dance TM when I didn't have 10 blue shards. I did this 22 times until I accidently clicked red shard and the blue shard option disappeared. M4192 (talk) 05:32, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Jirachi

How is that classified as an event? It's a reward for completing the game in Pokemon Channel. The only basis for an event, would be for the preorder disc which cannot be obtained anymore. noskap (talk) 08:44, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Indeed I was referring to the pre-order disc with the above statement, which removes that option. It's also worth noting that when this list was created, it was only the main series on the handheld consoles that was being referred to; not the games developed for other consoles. Quite simply put, if it is not caught in the wild it is considered unobtainable. Rewards given out in other games do not count. MelicansMatkin (talk, contributions) 14:25, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Bootlegs?

How about a bootlegs section, covering, lessee...

  • Pokemon Jade/Diamond (Telefang bootlegs, not to be confused with the REAL upcoming Diamond game)
  • Pokemon... Black, was it?, for Jap GB
  • SEGA Genesis (platform?) games
  • I think there was a NES game... or was it a SNES one...? I forget...

...anyway, that could become an interesting section thing! ...also you could talk about how fans clamoured to have Green fan-translated, and several teams competed for months, and only then did the fanboys discovered it was essentially the same ****ing game that they already had all those months ago... hehehe... that was funny... hehehe... if that could be written in a NPOV and notable way of course...

Anyway, I think no article would be complete without the bootlegs. Heck, I could contribute myself if need be seeing as I've actually acquired Telefang Diamond.

No, that is not a complete list, as people with the right tools can make them themselves. I also distinctively remember playing Pokemon Orange, where you were on islands. MissingNo. glitch

It is accessed with a glitch that involves undergoing a tutorial in Viridian City (which temporarily places the player's name into the RAM space that is accessed to determine which Pokémon can be caught in an area), then immediately flying to Cinnabar Island, and surfing along the coast. Cinnabar Island's coast has no data on which Pokémon can be caught, and thus whatever is presently in the RAM (in this case, the player's name) is used. As most names in the English language will not resolve into a Pokémon's ID, Missingno. is created.

Does this involve that having a player name that exactly matches the name of an actual Pokémon will summon that Pokémon if the glitch is executed? --Stage7 (talk) 19:25, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Proposition to make this a true Pokémon (series) article

On most other languages, this article refers to the main Pokémon series of games. Even in the intro of this article it mentions that the Pokémon series are the main games made by Game Freak, not including the spin-offs.

I think we should change this article so it's sole focus is the actual Pokémon series games (the main games). There are lots of other articles already that list Pokémon spin-offs, and to be honest there isn't even much detailed info about the spin-offs in this article. Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee Generation.

As far as Iknow, it hasn't been exactly confirmed which generation Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee will be. In fact, I feel iffy even calling it a main series game. Many newsite also consider it as a separate project. but this should not be called gen 8, it is also not referred as such on most other newsite / notable pokemon fansites. gen 8 most likely is the 2019 core RPG, which is stated to be similar to X/Y & Sun/Moon in the Tokyo conference. -115.66.196.146 (talk) 09:41, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

@J850NK: That template isn't appropriate - the information he's talking about is sourced in the article. I think the reason it's not included currently in the release timeline is because they aren't new game releases, but expansion packs for the existing game(s) Pokémon Sword and Shield. But either way, the request is only a couple hours old. @Volteer1: Thank you for this - it's very helpful. I apologise if I had closed the request pre-emptively/used the wrong template. To explain, I had looked in the article and seen what you are talking about (in terms of the context of it being an expansion pack rather than a new game), hence why I thought more sources may be beneficial to explain whether it warranted addition to the new releases list. Black 2 & White 2

Can someone explain to me why these are "Derivative" titles in the same vein as JP Blue, and not "Upper" titles in the same vein as Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon (which seems like a far more apt comparison to me)? -Kez (talk) 15:09, 6 October 2021 (UTC)

@Erolos: Black 2 and White 2 are technically full sequels to Black and White. Looking at the chart in this talk page, it appears "Derivative" means that the game is based on a previous game. "Upper" titles appear to basically be better versions of the game. So for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, they're basically the same game as Sun and Moon but have been improved upon slightly. Current sales figures are not official

The current figures for RGB (31.37 million) / GS (23.1 million) on the article are not official. They are also impossible (for GS) and therefore wrong. They are estimates from VGChartz (RGB / GS) supposedly as of 2012.

They probably became popular due to their partnership with Guinness World Records (here) which probably resulted in these figures appearing in the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition. This probably led to these figures being echoed by other books and media outlets.

The latest official figures (約4年ぶり！ ポケモン完全新作が2010年内発売へ) are 29.04 million units for Red/Blue/Green and 23.73 million units for Gold/Silver as of the end of September 2009.

I believe estimates from VGChartz are usually removed from Wikipedia articles. I think official figures are always preferred even if they are outdated. In this case, the estimates are also impossible for Gold and Silver because they are too low to be real (VGChartz estimated 23.1 as of 2012. Yet official data shows 23.73 as of 2009).

The latest official figures for Yellow and Crystal are unknown. The current figures on this article (14.64 million and 6.39 million) also trace their way back to VGChartz (Y / C). I believe they should be removed too.

I said that it's impossible because VGChartz estimated 23.1 as of 2012. Yet official data shows 23.73 as of 2009. When they made their estimates, VGChartz wasn't even aware of official data being available in Japanese media as of 2010. ORICON NEWS is a Japanese publication that has been around for a long time. Also, in the Wikipedia article for ORICON, it says this, "For example, the debut single of NEWS, a pop group, was released only through 7-Eleven stores, which are not covered by Oricon, and its sales were not reflected in the Oricon charts. Ref 56 for GS is a source from IGN which is considered reliable, it's also a pre-sale figure. Ref 6 for Crystal is a review score. There is no shortage of Western publications citing those numbers. The mistake is widespread. It's made worse by Guinness World Records partnering with VGChartz. The author is not an expert in video games (here) and the book is not about video games either. Covering so many topics makes it less likely to be reliable and rankings are not necessarily reliable. When you look at it, this raises several issues with the VGChartz figures:

  • It's impossible that GS only sold 23.1 million as of 2012 because it officially sold 23.73 million as of 2009
  • It's extremely unlikely that RGB sold 2.33 million in 2010-2011 because officially it only sold 2.48 million in 2001-2008
  • The combined figure of 75.5 million as of 2012 is too low because it was already 76 million as of 2003

If VGChartz estimated 0 combined units sold since 2003, how did they also estimate RGB selling 2.33 million in 2010-2011? The problem here is that these estimates are clearly not accurate at all. They were made without taking official figures into account because VGChartz didn't know about them.

The estimates are not accurate regardless of who is publishing them after VGChartz did (so anything after 2012) because they are not even compatible with earlier official figures. We should fall back to the latest official figures. --Taketrite (talk) 13:24, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
