Pre-history

This article was split off from the main Pokémon article [1]. For the history before 28 February 2005, see that article. --Henrygb 23:49, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Character Names - sources

The default/official character names tidbits are actually pretty cool. Where is it posted/discovered that the original GB games initialized names were Nintendo and Sony? Also, are there corresponding default-in-memory names for the GBC and GBA games?

Promotional events

  • "There are no ways to obtain Mew without using a cheating device or obtaining it directly from Nintendo at promotional events (which are no longer ongoing in Japan). These events were Japan-only and were not hosted elsewhere."

This isn't true. I personally went to an event in The Netherlands where I got a Mew. It was pretty small and lame, though, with a distinct lack of people, so I don't really know how to change this.

Consoles?

This article is entitled "Pokemon Video Games", so theoretically it should also contain information on games such as "Pokemon Stadium" and "Pokemon Colloseum" (albeit separate from handheld section).

Major cleanup

I did a major cleanup of this page. There were plenty of threads that belonged in a forum. ~Crowstar~ 23:09, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Pokémon video game series

Shouldn't this article be titled Pokémon video game series?. That name sounds a bit more logical. The way it is titled now, Pokémon (video games), makes you think that the article is about a number of video games all titled Pokémon. If I hear no objections, I'll move this page soon. - Face 17:58, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

Pokemon (Video Games) is used for disambiguation. SpigotMap 02:05, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
Disambiguation? This doesn't look like a disambiguation page to me. More like an undeveloped subarticle of the main Pokémon article. But do you agree with my point? Sorry for my slow reaction by the way, I forgot to look on this page for quiet a while. Cheers, Face 16:42, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
You're right, It isn't, my mistake. Anyways, are you willing to take care of the other tasks involving moving a page? SpigotMap 17:20, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
Ehm... what tasks? If you refer to the articles linking to this page, isn't it true that an article becomes a redirect after it is moved to another name? - Face 20:42, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
Wikipedia does its best to fix redirects, but most of the time things still get broken. SpigotMap 21:51, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
Could you clarify that please? - Face 10:30, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
Well, I don't want to wait even longer with this, so I'll just do it. - Face 18:46, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Dpbattle.jpg

Image:Dpbattle.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Enhanced DP

Is there any news on an enhanced remake of Diamond/Pearl or anything? thx S-m-r-t (talk) 15:43, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

If you mean a third game with a relation to DP like Yellpw to Red and Blue, Crystal to Gold and Silver, and Emerald to Ruby and Saphire, then no. All I can tell you is that Giratina is probably going to be the version mascot.DarkGreen (talk) 22:53, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Pokémon generation

I see in some places each generation named: I - Colour(red, blue, yellow, green), II - Metallic(Gold,Silver,Crystal), Should this be put in the article?--MCP9999 (talk) 19:20, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow screenshot.png

The image Image:Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow screenshot.png is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Mew glitch

I just wanted to point out, that the link Mew glitch in the section "Unobtainable" Pokémon isn't leading anywhere. --90.146.43.64 (talk) 11:31, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Yes, that's because the glitches section was removed from the Red and Blue article. However, I have fixed the link to redirect to the bottom of this article, so it should work now. Cheers, Artichoker[talk] 13:56, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Main Series

I've noticed that Mystery Dungeon and Ranger have been included within the 'main series', I've always thought that Nintendo saw them as spin-offs. The main series titles are RPG's, and following a same basic formula (3 starters, 8 gyms, elite 4 etc.). DancingCyberman (talk) 08:18, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

MissingNo. FfDs

So there are two MissingNo. images - File:Missingno-ny.png and File:Missingno.png, with respective FfD discussions here and here. The first image is used on the MNo. page, the second is used here. Mew?

Just for the sake of history, and the fact that it is mentioned at later times, does anyone remember the period in the 90's where toys r us was giving out mews during the red/blue era? /172.144.14.178 19:14, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

I wouldn't call how the DS reacts when Diamond/Pearl is removed "fixing" a glitch; for any commercial DS game, removing it fires an interrupt that shuts down the system. --72.196.151.10 00:29, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

I left you a friendly message about citations Superpika66. Don't take it as a warning, just as a referenced for WP:V and WP:RS. I'm afraid this glitch section may fall under WP:OR unless a reliable source can be found. SpigotMap 03:26, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

I found a glitch in Diamond/Pearl! I went to the shard person west of Pastoria and I had more than 10 shards of every colour except for Blue. But when I tried to trade shards for TMs, blue shards was on the list! I got a rain dance TM when I didn't have 10 blue shards. I did this 22 times until I accidently clicked red shard and the blue shard option disappeared. M4192 (talk) 05:32, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

Jirachi

Jirachi cannot be caught in the wild, but it is not one of the 'unobtainables', it can be recieved through a preorder disc that came with preordered copies of pokemon colleseum(sp), and through completion of pokemon channel on the gamecube. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Noskap (talkcontribs) 07:05, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Which would qualify as a "promotional event", which is noted in the article. MelicansMatkin (talk, contributions) 07:08, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

How is that classified as an event? It's a reward for completing the game in Pokemon Channel. The only basis for an event, would be for the preorder disc which cannot be obtained anymore. noskap (talk) 08:44, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Indeed I was referring to the pre-order disc with the above statement, which removes that option. It's also worth noting that when this list was created, it was only the main series on the handheld consoles that was being referred to; not the games developed for other consoles. Quite simply put, if it is not caught in the wild it is considered unobtainable. Rewards given out in other games do not count. MelicansMatkin (talk, contributions) 14:25, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
I agree completely. They are not found during normal gameplay. If you have to have a side series game to get it, then that doesn't count. Blake (Talk·Edits) 14:30, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Bootlegs?

How about a bootlegs section, covering, lessee...

  • Pokemon Jade/Diamond (Telefang bootlegs, not to be confused with the REAL upcoming Diamond game)
  • Pokemon... Black, was it?, for Jap GB
  • SEGA Genesis (platform?) games
  • I think there was a NES game... or was it a SNES one...? I forget...

...anyway, that could become an interesting section thing! ...also you could talk about how fans clamoured to have Green fan-translated, and several teams competed for months, and only then did the fanboys discovered it was essentially the same ****ing game that they already had all those months ago... hehehe... that was funny... hehehe... if that could be written in a NPOV and notable way of course...

Anyway, I think no article would be complete without the bootlegs. Heck, I could contribute myself if need be seeing as I've actually acquired Telefang Diamond.

So, what do you think, cool idea, or just plain stupid? :) Master Thief Garrett 05:43, 9 May 2005 (UTC)

As long as said bootlegs are reasonably well-known, I don't see why not. ^_^ --Sparky the Seventh Chaos 02:38, May 10, 2005 (UTC)

These is the complete list of unauthorized Pokemon Games: (I saw this in the Filipino Wikipedia)
  • Pokémon Jade
  • Pokémon Frigo
  • Pokémon Naranja
  • Pokémon Chaos Black
  • Pokémon ShinyGold (an unauthorized remake of Pokémon Gold)
  • Pokémon DarkCry (Mew is obtainble)
  • Pokémon Crater (in the internet)
  • Pokémon Crystal (not to be confused with the Pokémon Crystal on the GBC, this fake remake was released on the GBA)
  • Pokémon SeaBlue (a bootleg remake of Pokémon Blue)
  • Pokémon Brick Bronze (A remake version of Pokémon on Roblox)

That's all I got. Dar book (talk) 08:21, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

I made a small section of them on the page. --Victory93 (talk) 07:39, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

No, that is not a complete list, as people with the right tools can make them themselves. I also distinctively remember playing Pokemon Orange, where you were on islands. What you have is a list, potentially a list of most well known ones, but it is not a complete list, and you most likely never will get a complete list.Black.jeff (talk) 08:38, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

MissingNo. glitch

It is accessed with a glitch that involves undergoing a tutorial in Viridian City (which temporarily places the player's name into the RAM space that is accessed to determine which Pokémon can be caught in an area), then immediately flying to Cinnabar Island, and surfing along the coast. Cinnabar Island's coast has no data on which Pokémon can be caught, and thus whatever is presently in the RAM (in this case, the player's name) is used. As most names in the English language will not resolve into a Pokémon's ID, Missingno. is created.

Does this involve that having a player name that exactly matches the name of an actual Pokémon will summon that Pokémon if the glitch is executed? --Stage7 (talk) 19:25, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

No, I think it's more like hexadecimal values that determine both the level and the Pokémon (e.g. the name "DxDyDz" will yield level 254-256 Mewtwos.) Artichoker[talk] 20:01, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Proposition to make this a true Pokémon (series) article

On most other languages, this article refers to the main Pokémon series of games. Even in the intro of this article it mentions that the Pokémon series are the main games made by Game Freak, not including the spin-offs.

I think we should change this article so it's sole focus is the actual Pokémon series games (the main games). There are lots of other articles already that list Pokémon spin-offs, and to be honest there isn't even much detailed info about the spin-offs in this article. Josephvb10 (talk) 19:57, 9 September 2018 (UTC)

I've went away with the article cleanup. Now the article should more coincide with the ones on other Wikipedias and represent the true Pokémon series. Josephvb10 (talk) 08:42, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee Generation.

As far as Iknow, it hasn't been exactly confirmed which generation Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee will be. In fact, I feel iffy even calling it a main series game. Should we remove it or atleast put it under a "Generation Unknown" section until we get enough confirmation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:306:3B1B:CDA0:998E:A13A:B2F1:C8C2 (talk) 06:59, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Many newsite also consider it as a separate project. but this should not be called gen 8, it is also not referred as such on most other newsite / notable pokemon fansites. gen 8 most likely is the 2019 core RPG, which is stated to be similar to X/Y & Sun/Moon in the Tokyo conference. -115.66.196.146 (talk) 09:41, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Add The Isle of Armor & The Crown Tundra to the release timeline for 2020 as it is currently blank for that year. 49.177.147.194 (talk) 06:23, 6 March 2021 (UTC)

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made.J850NK (talk) 09:03, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
@J850NK: That template isn't appropriate - the information he's talking about is sourced in the article. I think the reason it's not included currently in the release timeline is because they aren't new game releases, but expansion packs for the existing game(s) Pokémon Sword and Shield. But either way, the request is only a couple hours old. If you're not sure about something or think something would be easily sourced by someone else, the request doesn't need to be closed right away. Volteer1 (talk) 10:39, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
@Volteer1: Thank you for this - it's very helpful. I apologise if I had closed the request pre-emptively/used the wrong template. To explain, I had looked in the article and seen what you are talking about (in terms of the context of it being an expansion pack rather than a new game), hence why I thought more sources may be beneficial to explain whether it warranted addition to the new releases list. However, I'm not sure how best to respond, so should I re-open the request? Apologies again and thanks J850NK (talk) 11:46, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
Oh, that does make a little bit more sense, don't worry about it. But as it stands I do think it's fine keeping it closed, it's not really a new game release. Volteer1 (talk) 12:56, 6 March 2021 (UTC)

Black 2 & White 2

Can someone explain to me why these are "Derivative" titles in the same vein as JP Blue, and not "Upper" titles in the same vein as Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon (which seems like a far more apt comparison to me)? -Kez (talk) 15:09, 6 October 2021 (UTC)

@Erolos: Black 2 and White 2 are technically full sequels to Black and White. Looking at the chart in this talk page, it appears "Derivative" means that the game is based on a previous game. "Upper" titles appear to basically be better versions of the game. So for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, they're basically the same game as Sun and Moon but have been improved upon slightly. Current sales figures are not official

The current figures for RGB (31.37 million) / GS (23.1 million) on the article are not official. They are also impossible (for GS) and therefore wrong. They are estimates from VGChartz (RGB / GS) supposedly as of 2012.

They probably became popular due to their partnership with Guinness World Records (here) which probably resulted in these figures appearing in the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition. This probably led to these figures being echoed by other books and media outlets.

The latest official figures (約4年ぶり! ポケモン完全新作が2010年内発売へ) are 29.04 million units for Red/Blue/Green and 23.73 million units for Gold/Silver as of the end of September 2009.

I believe estimates from VGChartz are usually removed from Wikipedia articles. I think official figures are always preferred even if they are outdated. In this case, the estimates are also impossible for Gold and Silver because they are too low to be real (VGChartz estimated 23.1 as of 2012. Yet official data shows 23.73 as of 2009).

The latest official figures for Yellow and Crystal are unknown. The current figures on this article (14.64 million and 6.39 million) also trace their way back to VGChartz (Y / C). I believe they should be removed too.

Other Wikipedia articles probably have the same problem:

This mistake is widespread in Western media, so I think the article could maybe explain this on a footnote. --Taketrite (talk) 19:43, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

@Taketrite: You make a very good point! At WP:RS/P, VGChartz is classified as generally unreliable. I'm going to be bold and make the change. I don't really agree with the stats being impossible for the reason they are too low to be real, however since you have provided a more reliable source I think it's alright to change it. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:47, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
Actually, before I change it, mind telling me how the source you provided is more reliable than VGChartz? ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:48, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

I said that it's impossible because VGChartz estimated 23.1 as of 2012. Yet official data shows 23.73 as of 2009. When they made their estimates, VGChartz wasn't even aware of official data being available in Japanese media as of 2010. ORICON NEWS is a Japanese publication that has been around for a long time. Their article claims that the data is official. --Taketrite (talk) 19:56, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

@Taketrite: Alright. Also, what refs are you referring to as in the article I'm not seeing anything that mentions the sales figures. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:58, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
Also, in the Wikipedia article for ORICON, it says this, "For example, the debut single of NEWS, a pop group, was released only through 7-Eleven stores, which are not covered by Oricon, and its sales were not reflected in the Oricon charts. Oricon's rankings of record sales are therefore not completely accurate." which makes me think a different source would be better since it's not really a good idea to use a source that isn't completely accurate. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:02, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

They do estimates for music like Famitsu does estimates for video games. But this article is about video games. In this case, they are citing official figures. That's why they say "announced by Pokémon". --Taketrite (talk) 20:08, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

@Taketrite: Ah ok. Mind telling me what the ref numbers are so I can easily find them? Also, does Nintendo not have the official sales figures on one of their websites? ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:11, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

[56] for RGB, Y and GS. [62] for C. Nintendo only started publishing sales figures on their website in the Wii/DS era. That is why it is so hard to find official data for the GameBoy era. --Taketrite (talk) 20:18, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

(edit conflict) @Taketrite: Ah alright! That makes sense. I'll go ahead and check those sources. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:21, 2 December 2021 (UTC)
@Taketrite: Ref 56 for RGB: Ref is from The Pokemon Company so I see no reason why it would be wrong. Ref 56 does not exist for Yellow. Ref 56 for GS is a source from IGN which is considered reliable, it's also a pre-sale figure. Ref 6 for Crystal is a review score. Did you possibly get the source numbers wrong? ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:26, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

@Taketrite: I don't have access to the book so I will put in a request at resource request to see what it says (and maybe where it says it got the source from). I will change the Nintendo Soup source however as Nintendo Soup is considered an unreliable source per this discussion. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:38, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

There is no shortage of Western publications citing those numbers. The mistake is widespread. It's made worse by Guinness World Records partnering with VGChartz. But the oldest source that can be found for those numbers is VGChartz. I linked the archived versions at the beginning. --Taketrite (talk) 20:36, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

@Blaze The Wolf: I want to stress that the figure itself is not reliable regardless of who is quoting it. It's in direct contradiction with an earlier confirmed official figure. The origin is VGChartz. Because the mistake was replicated starting with the Guinness World Records, it might have ended up on books and news articles, but it doesn't mean it's correct. --Taketrite (talk) 21:26, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

@Blaze The Wolf:

  • JP: この記録は1999年発売、2373万本を売り上げた『ポケットモンスター 金・銀』以来となるもので
  • EN: This record is the first since "Pokémon Gold and Silver" was released in 1999 and sold 23.73 million copies.

IGN Japan also says 23.73 instead of 23.1 for Gold and Silver. --Taketrite (talk) 21:51, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

@Taketrite: Ah ok. So it's only about 600k copies off.... which is better than 1 million but still inaccurate. I'll let others know about this so they can assist in correcting it. You could possibly let others know yourself at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games since this is their relevant area. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 22:24, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

I clarified some of my initial points because most people are not going to read the entire conversation. I hope you don't mind. --Taketrite (talk) 02:19, 3 December 2021 (UTC)

@Taketrite: nope that's perfectly fine! ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 02:47, 3 December 2021 (UTC)

@Blaze The Wolf: How did the source request go? I want to say that the book doesn't look very reliable either way. The author is not an expert in video games (here) and the book is not about video games either. Covering so many topics makes it less likely to be reliable and rankings are not necessarily reliable. The fact that it literally contradicts official figures can't be overlooked for this book or any publication. --Taketrite (talk) 13:24, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

I made a summary of what is known to visualize it more easily. I also found additional information.

Summary of sources
Version VGChartz The Pokémon Company / Nintendo
RGB 31.37 as of 2012 26.56 as of 2000[1], 29.04 as of 2009[2]
Y 14.64 as of 2012 8.71 as of 2000[1]
GS 23.1 as of 2012 23.73 as of 2009[2]
C 6.39 as of 2012 -
Combined 75.5 as of 2012 ≥76 as of 2003[3]
1. ^ Nintendo via Nintendo Online Magazine
2. ^ The Pokémon Company via ORICON NEWS, confirmed by IGN Japan
3. ^ Nintendo via 2004 CESA Games White Paper, but individual figures were not disclosed

When you look at it, this raises several issues with the VGChartz figures:

  • It's impossible that GS only sold 23.1 million as of 2012 because it officially sold 23.73 million as of 2009
  • It's extremely unlikely that RGB sold 2.33 million in 2010-2011 because officially it only sold 2.48 million in 2001-2008
  • The combined figure of 75.5 million as of 2012 is too low because it was already 76 million as of 2003

If VGChartz estimated 0 combined units sold since 2003, how did they also estimate RGB selling 2.33 million in 2010-2011? The problem here is that these estimates are clearly not accurate at all. They were made without taking official figures into account because VGChartz didn't know about them.

The estimates are not accurate regardless of who is publishing them after VGChartz did (so anything after 2012) because they are not even compatible with earlier official figures. We should fall back to the latest official figures. --Taketrite (talk) 13:24, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

Yeah, we should not be using VGChartz. Timur9008 (talk) 15:30, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

@Blaze The Wolf: I hope you are doing well. Does the author reveal his sources? If it says Nintendo, does it say when and where Nintendo announced those figures? --Taketrite (talk) 14:37, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

@Taketrite: Unfortunately the sources don't appear to be on the page that is sourced in the articles. My guess is if the author does list their sources they're towards the end of the book. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:45, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
