Buehner House vs Armstrong Hall[edit]

Hey Another Believer (talk · contribs), are you good at NPS cites? this nomination lists both names. tedder (talk) 22:21, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ipoellet, Do you know if there's a specific template to use, or just the 'cite web' template? ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:28, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
BTW it's in the infobox on the "NRHP reference #". Not sure how to cite it, I thought there was a special cite for them. tedder (talk) 22:53, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Here is the official WPNRHP guidance on citation formats. Personally I don't like the citation formats suggested there, so I do something different:
{{citation | last1 = Rigau | first1 = Jorge | authorlink1 = Jorge Rigau | date = March 16, 1987 | title = National Register of Historic Places Inventory—Nomination Form: Eleuterio Derkes Grammar School | url = {{NRHP url|87001312}} | url-status = live | archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20191022024609/https://npgallery.nps.gov/NRHP/GetAsset/NRHP/87001312_text | archivedate = October 22, 2019 | accessdate = October 21, 2019 | format = PDF }}.
I take the author name and date from the "Form Prepared By" section of the nomination form, and the place name in the title comes from the historic name line of the form. So to answer tedder's specific question, I would use "Buehner, Philip, House" and not "Armstrong Hall", regardless of how the rest of the citation is formatted. OTOH, I might consider "Armstrong Hall" for the article title if it meets WP:COMMONNAME.
In any event, the NRHP reference # rarely appears on the nomination form. It does not in the case of the Buehner House, so the nomination would be an incorrect reference for that particular infobox item. A bit more broadly, I generally do not put a citation on the refnum at all. This is because the refnum is not "likely to be challenged" (see the first few lines of WP:CITE). Hope this helps. — Ipoellet (talk) 23:38, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
