The details of Guillam's behavior on confronting the mole "Gerald" were a bit off--in fact, Guillam attacks Gerald in both novel and television serial, and Smiley doesn't do much of anything about it. The relevant passage from the novel, replacing the actual name of the mole with the code name Gerald: "He had not even taken the pipe from his mouth before Guillam had Gerald by the collar. With a single heave he lifted him straight out of his chair. He...was hurling Gerald from side to side, shaking him, and shouting. Then suddenly there seemed no point...Guillam had drawn back long before Mendel took his arm..."Craigkbryant (talk) 13:22, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

An additional reason, and probably more significant one, why the inner circle of the Circus do not want the mole investigated is that they already know there is a mole. Remember that they believe they have Polyakov as an agent and contact with merlin, and in order for Polyakov to meet them safely, they need to pretend that Polyakov has a source within the Circus. That source is acted by Toby Esterhase. So when Ricky Tarr reports that there's a mole in the circus, they of course believe that he is referring to Toby, who is acting a mole in order to maintain their contact with Polyakov. And that contact they want to preserve. (The situation with Connie Sachs is similar: Connie states that Polyakov must be running an English mole, whereup she is fired for what probably is much the same reason.)Athulin (talk) 12:48, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
