This unit of measure isn't really obsolete. It is commonly used in the jewelry industry. I work for a large jewelry manufacturer that manufactures and sells jewelry and jewelry components as well as raw metals. The unit of measure that we use to weight the items that are sold by weight is pennyweight, which we abbreviate as DWT. Gram is probably more commonly used in retail establishments when communicating with consumers, but DWT is alive and well in the jewelry manufacturing industry, which tends to adhere to "old school" practices! Obsolete?[edit]

I recently had some pieces of jewelry appraised, and the jeweler used dwt in his written estimate of the weight of the stones. I would say that the unit is not at all obsolete. CdanDelivery 21:20, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tower pennyweight[edit]

The lighter tower pound (5400 [troy] grains) could also be divided into 240 tower pennyweights. pennyweight being 1/20 of the relevant ounce. Rod57 (talk) 14:10, 6 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
