Pat SpurginPat Pitney – The article subject first became notable as a 1984 Olympic gold medalist under her maiden name, Pat Spurgin. However, for most of her life she has been known by her married name, Pat Pitney, and she has achieved new notability as the current University of Alaska system president under that name. Of the 16 post-2000 cited sources for the article, 13 of them refer to her only as Pat Pitney. The remaining three sources are mostly interested in her Olympian history: one calls her Pat Spurgin Pitney (Murray State Racers source), another calls her Pat Spurgin Pitney in the lede and Pitney throughout the article body (Anchorage Daily News source), and the third calls her Spurgin in the title, Pat Spurgin Pitney in the lede, and Pitney throughout the article body (Murray Ledger source). Relevant policy is WP:NAMECHANGES (reliable sources written after the name change routinely use the Pitney name) and WP:COMMONNAME (the Pitney name is the one that contemporary readers are likely to search for, because she is now primarily notable as the university president). • Support per well articulated nomination. The redirect will still get people where they need to be. -2pou (talk) 17:30, 15 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Inform recent editors of proposed name change[edit]

@Oceanh, Lugnuts, Dannilynnee, Zyxw, Russian Bear2010, and Akira Kouchiyama: Hello,

You have made a substantial contribution to the article Pat Spurgin during the last ten years. I'm writing to advise you that I am proposing to move this page from Pat Spurgin, the name under which the subject achieved notability as a 1984 Olympic gold medalist, to Pat Pitney, the name under which the subject has been known for most of her life and under which she has attained recent notability as the president of the University of Alaska system. Your comments would be welcome. Dieter.Meinertzhagen (talk) 22:31, 14 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dieter - thanks for the ping. Support per the refs in the article. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 07:19, 15 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
