?? This article needs clarification:

Untitled[edit]

1) For any object on the ground, the shadow disappears when the sun is directly above it.

2) The site is close to the equator (2.5 degrees north), so to speak of "the shortest day of the year" is rather strange, since all the days there are very close to 12 hours long, whatever the time of year.

3) At latitude 2.5N, the sun is not directly over anything on 21st December. On that date, it is about 23 degrees south of the equator, so it is not overhead at Calcoene, even at noon.

4) It is possible that a stone has been identified with one or more straight sides which are judged to have been artificially prepared and/or aligned and that the sun lies close to the plane of one or more of these sides at some time judged to be significant (e.g. sunrise, noon or sunset on the day of the December solstice). But this is not clear from the text above. (Nor is it clear, since there is no reference to a statistical analysis or indication of the accuracy of the alleged alignment that, among 127 stones, it is unlikely that such an alignment might occur by chance).

Just moving whoever's comments to the discussion page where they belong.--Elatanatari 04:45, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This page should probably be merged with that for Calçoene, since the British seem to consider the term "henge" proprietary, and so would take issue with the description of this monument as an "Amazon Stonehenge", which would be inaccurate in any case. "Calçoene" is a stub as it is, and mostly devoted to this monument. Feel free to delete this paragraph after a formal request for merger has been posted, which I do not know how to do - M.D. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.120.96.148 (talk) 04:12, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

COORDINATES, PLEASE[edit]

Anyone have the coordinates for this site? --Ragemanchoo (talk) 04:39, 8 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, this page needs coordinates added. An extensive search online and via Google Earth have turned up nothing.... --PaulBHartzog

Merger proposal[edit]

I propose that this page be merged into the Calçoene article, which has the exact same subject. ♆ CUSH ♆ 20:41, 9 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support, it's a duplicate article. ♆ CUSH ♆ 22:47, 11 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Disagree. They're completely different. Calçoene is a sizable municipality of Brazil. Amazon Stonehenge is a small archaeological site and protected area known as Parque Arqueológico do Solstício located in Calçoene, apparently administered by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN). They do share an image. Prburley (talk) 12:33, 7 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - The content of article Calçoene has minimal information regarding any other feature of the region. I would change my vote to a Keep if Calçoene was expanded to more extensively cover the municipality as a whole and not just the "Calçoene megalithic observatory" centered around the location featured in Amazon Stonehenge. Abovethestorm (talk) 02:18, 21 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Disagree - This is as nonsense as proposing to merge Stonehenge into Wiltshire. They are completely different things, as duly noted by Prburley above. For the moment, I suggest removing the duplicate content from Calçoene, reducing it to a stub. —capmo (talk) 17:50, 19 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Disagree too of course, per capmo and Prburley. I think the 1 paragraph section in Calçoene is good as an intro, this article is much longer. Tisquesusa (talk) 18:02, 19 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Closing, given consensus not to merge. I note that the section on the target has been appropriately shortened. Klbrain (talk) 13:41, 24 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

the alignment (no hole)[edit]

Revista de Arqueologia v. 21, no. 1 (2008) > "Megalithic landscapes on the north coast of Amapa" Mariana Petry Cabral John Darcy de Moura Saldanha 2[1] "interesting interpretations on the use of this website by its builders as a time counter or astronomical observatory. From our observations, there are at least two correlations between rock blocks and the December solstice. From the observation of the slope and position of one of the stone blocks, José Elias Avila proposed that during the December solstice the block could be no shadow, indicating its alignment with the sun. This observation was made in the last three years during the December solstice, resulting in the confirmation of perfectly aligned position of the block of rock with the sun in this period. Also notice this block of rock in the afternoon solstice led to the perception that the inclinamento block also indicated the sun's path towards the west (Figure 5). The second correlation observed between the December solstice and the block structure Rock involves an alignment between the ends of two rock blocks and the position of the sun at birth. Such that at sunrise solstitial sun three points are aligned. This relationship was observed in the last two years. These observations favor the interpretation that this archaeological site was also used as a place for the observation of sols-Titius. Also considering the cyclical nature of the solstice, you can also imagine that this date marked a temporality for the group that used the site, also serving as a concrete time counter. List of sources[edit]

Here's a page (whether personal or data-scraping, I can't tell) listing papers that relate to one of the archaeologists involved. One of those appears to be the November 2009 edition of National Geographic magazine, which would make a nice source, if anybody can lay hands on that. And there are various scientific papers, mostly in Portuguese.  Card Zero  (talk) 20:52, 7 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
