Changed redirect[edit]

This redirect is only a temporary measure until someone does a short article on the Parker River. Or not so short, as the case may be. Due to peculiarities of local geography Parker River National Wildlife Sanctuary is not the best place to redirect. The sanctuary is never called Parker River for short. It is always Plum Island Wildlife Sanctuary. That is because the sanctuary is predominantly on Plum Island. It includes a small tract of marsh at the mouth of the Parker River, which is only a shore station and a marsh that is never dry, where people with the proper license can drive a boat to shoot ducks. That's right. As with anything else, all the big advertising about the "protection" of wildlife covers a shooting range. Ducks are protected all right, provided they don't fly over the mouth of the Parker River. But, hunting occurs all along the inside of the Great Marsh. Stock also grazes on the inside of the marsh. It just can't be done on Plum Island National Wildlife Refuge, which, no doubt, offers considerable protection for the majority of birds that fly through there. Come to think of it those are in nowhere near the numbers that used to fly through there. So, the Parker River - the name ALWAYS means only the Parker River - is discussed most under Newbury, Massachusetts. The Parker River used to be a port for 50-60 ton sailing vessels coming up Plum Island Sound from the Ipswich River, before Newburyport was settled and before Newburyport Harbor was open and accessible. So, there probably is quite a lot on the history of the Parker River, although looking at it today you would never suspect. I put a few pictures of the river in commons under Parker River if you should be interested in doing it.Dave (talk) 02:23, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
