A history section is needed, or at least a mention of the origins of the practice. I suspect it goes back to Gregory VII, but am not sure. Would also be good to mention the way it backfired against Catholics in the English Reformation. JKeck (talk) 19:09, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hey y'all, just a possible suggestion: do you think intervention of the papacy to remove the Merovingians, in favor of Pépin, should be included here? Or does that example not quite fit?
