If the modern city is usually known as Palmyra (certainly normally referred to as such in reports on the Syrian civil war) then shouldn't the article title be moved? I agree. The present situation is highly unsatisfactory. It is quite clear that both the ancient and modern cities are referred to as 'Palmyra' in English, just as both cities are 'Tadmur' in Arabic. All recent coverage has referred to 'Palmyra', not 'Tadmur. I would suggest Ancient Palmyra for the ancient site, and Palmyra for the modern city. Tadmur → Palmyra (modern) – As the article acknowledges itself, this city is normally known as "Palmyra" in English, it is normally referred to as such in news reports on the Syrian civil war, Wikipedia articles on this conflict refer to "Palmyra offensives". Maybe: The suggestion in the section above (renaming the article about the old city: Ancient Palmyra) is highly problematic. No academic, new or old, source would have the newly built city first in mind when mentioning the name "Palmyra". The new city took its name from the old one, and the "ancient" one have the right to its name without any additions such as "ancient". That's fine, if you want to make ancient Palmyra the primary topic. I'm not certain that it is, given the nature of the recent conflict, but I'll support "the arrangement of Sparta and new Sparta" for the sake of sorting this out. Yes and no Pat. Tadmur is the official name for this new city and the only reason for why this new city is even mentioned in world news is because of its connection to the proper historic one.
