Misinterpretation of the US Thirteenth Amendment.[edit]

However, private use is permissible in the U.S. through federal and state laws, which are grounded in the 13th Constitutional amendment abolishing slavery except as a punishment for a crime

The Thirteenth Amendment contains two important aspects: slavery and involuntary servitude. This amendment allows the use of forced labor (rather than slavery) for punishment purposes, provided that “the party shall have been duly convicted,” that is, after going through a legal procedure, that slavery does not entail. The wording given in the article, namely “...abolishing slavery except as a punishment for a crime,” may suggest that slavery is still possible in the United States, which does not reflect reality HANGMAN1 (talk) 15:11, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
