Country change[edit]

@FreeKnowledgeCreator:Hello - just wondered why the country has been changed from England to United Kingdom. There is no definable WP policy on naming conventions (although I have checked and most say United Kingdom, not England, Scotland, Wales etc). Do you know of an official policy or is this just the way they are presented normally? Not a criticism, just wanting to understand.

I did raise a thread at The Teahouse about it Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions#Naming conventions for countries, which seems to back up your edit above my opinion, hence why I have not reverted and left well alone. As I said, I am not being critical, just trying to understand. Regards. The joy of all things (talk) 13:04, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Most people would understand "country" to mean an independent state, and that is what it appears to mean in the context of an infobox. In that relevant sense, the United Kingdom is a country, but England is not. That is the rationale for the change, along with the fact that infoboxes for films do usually give the country for films produced in the UK as the United Kingdom and not England, Wales, or Scotland. I have no interest in discussing the issue further. Undo the change if you so wish. FreeKnowledgeCreator (talk) 02:29, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
