Inappropriate tone[edit]

A lot of this reads like promo. "Hard-hitting" according to whom? "…a film that blasts through the polarizing logjam of the climate change debate to bring a solid plan for solutions" with no attribution of this description? Ditto "…loves to use her camera as a bridge to bring herself and the audience deep into worlds they may never otherwise enter," which no one but Timoner herself could really know. But I suppose there's a fair chance that she wrote it herself, or someone quite close to her did, raising a possible issue of conflict of interest rather than just tone. - Jmabel | Talk 17:08, 13 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Effort to address sourcing and other issues underway[edit]

The effort to address the bare URL issue is well underway, with 12 of 20 current sources converted from URL-only, to full citations. While this will not prevent link rot, it will allow future editors to update the original citation (either by updating future dead links, or if need be, simply removing them).

Note, the reporters and reviewers that do the hard work to write the content that we source, to create these encyclopedic articles, deserve to have their bylines respected—not just the famous ones like Roger Ebert, all of them. To cite CNN, BBC, WSJ, NYT, and other articles with bylines, and not indicate who it was at each venue the wrote the cited article does a disservice to WP readers (who may wish to know these writers names), and is, in a scholarly and journalistic sense, just shoddy writing practice. That it is widespread here at WP, is not being argued, esp. in entertainment-type articles; that it is contrary to WP policy and to the standards of good writing practice to which we should hold ourselves—this, rather, is the argument.

At the same time, the appearance of links directly in the text, in particular to the article subjects' web pages, has also been rectified (they now appear in External links).

As well, new sources are added as they are found—e.g., the "fascist" prose in describing one movie subject absolutely demanded sourcing—and the content of the sources is being compared to text, both to extend coverage (there remains ample material that is unsourced here), and to verify the claims made for the sources, as time permits. For instance, the article content that ascribes honors to Ms Timoner's Yale degree has been removed for a lack of a current independent source of the information (temporarily, until someone besides her publicist, or her organizations, or the indirect, echoing mouthpieces of the same, Festival bios and the like, can serve as the source of the factual content). In short, someone besides the subject, or her closest associates, need to provide the factual biographical information that we use.

At the same time, an eye is being kept open for critical publication content—to address the earlier claim that the article is positively biased toward the title subject. However, this is a challenging enterprise, given the clear storied accomplishments of this documentarian, and the nature of entertainment reporting. Evenso, we must keep antennae attuned to reporting other than mere accolades.

Bottom line, the same high quality that this article's subject brings to her art is demanded of those that would set their mind to write about her; let's get this right, here on out. 71.239.87.100 (talk) 06:27, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In re: licensed "Interloper Films" content[edit]

Two points, first, and tangentially, the link to this provided in the foregoing opening banner about the use of this licensed content is to a dead link.[dead link]

Second, I judge it entirely inappropriate to use factual information from the linked website, in this article, as it is non-independent of the article subject. She is, for goodness sake, founder and CEO of the company from whom this permission was received.

With all due respect, because of clear non-independence, and conflict of interest, any information from Interloper that appears should be verified via independent sources. Le Prof 71.239.87.100 (talk) 06:04, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Much improved...[edit]

... but whose phrase is "cutting-edge innovators who use technology to disrupt outdated industries, empower people, and change the world"? Hers or someone else's? Right now it's in the article's narrative voice, which is clearly not acceptable. Similarly for "...who are using technology to empower and educate..." and the totally uncited "BYOD is the only talk show in the world focused solely on documentaries with an archive of over 100 episodes in which Timoner interviews top documentary filmmakers about their work."
