Nationality and life story[edit]

Just for clarity - there is no independent evidence that Norma Whalley was Australian born, or that her father was a "Dr Henry Octavius Whalley" of Sydney or Melbourne, as she so often claimed. The newspaper sources cited here do report this, but NSW and Victorian Births Deaths and Marriages (which can be searched for free) and the Sands directories show no matching or even similar names - nor a birth certificate for her (which, if her father were a doctor, would be extremely unusual). In fact, Dr Henry Octavius Whalley only seems to appear in print after she gained some notoriety. I suggest those researching this interesting actress take all her claims with a pinch of salt. Charles Erin Verner's claim to have been married to her (The Los Angeles Times, 6 Sep 1904) also seems to have no foundation.
