Was it really NODD?[edit]

This is a controversial point - it's been widely suggested that the device was called Noddy, because it nodded up and down - indeed there was a companion device called Big Ears which was a dual slide scanner - and NODD was an unofficial Backronym, which has perpetuated. Discussion at http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2008/03/pic_of_the_day_bbc1_ident_1.html with some BBC staff involved with the device suggests that it's controversial.

There is no evidence that the acroynm "NODD" was ever used within the BBC. Its first usage was on an internet forum in the 2000s. It is not recognised by anyone who worked in BBC Presentation or Engineering during the time the system was in use. 213.132.48.105 (talk) 12:22, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Consequently a page move request has been added where wikipedia guidelines instruct - at the bottom of this page.

Another interpretation - NODD is the process of applying the colour to a black and white image, but it was also the nickname used for the racks of idents and clocks that were filmed. The room name for them was actually 'The Noddy room', but the name refers to the process. Rafmarham (talk) 21:09, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lead[edit]

Can't make sense of this[edit]

"It was the longest running clock of 1974 and 1985 in Wales and was the last region to adopt the computerized clock and preserved the polo dot." NODD (Nexus Orthicon Display Device) → Noddy (camera) – As shown in both the article and this talk page, there is a detailed argument for the renaming of this page, including citations. Support - basically anything on those lines would be an improvement. The backronym is anachronistic and unconvincing. It wasn't widely used as a name for the thing either, so it shouldn't have any place in the article title. I'd even be happy with "BBC spinny globe on a stick" as an improvement. external links are all broken[edit]
