Castle[edit]

Hi Mark: My understanding is that there is no remaining structure from the original castle. See the link I've added to the 1887 report, which shows no tower on the east side. Please clarify. cheers Nesbit 18:19, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - evidence for the tower on the east side is from two sources: (1) architect who carried out the restoration work for the current owner and examined the fabric in detail and (2) the account in Pevsner's Borders (2006, p. 598) which states that "The walls of the E portion are thicker than the remainder...suggesting that part of the earlier castle is incorporated at this end of the house".

By the way, this vol has a very good account of the House - one of us should digest and add to the Wiki account in due course.Mark Nesbitt 13:50, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Should we say The house was incorporates, at its eastern end, the remains of a square pele tower from the former Nisbet Castle ? Nesbit 15:22, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nisbet Castle[edit]

I have removed the reference to Nisbet Castle - as far as I understand there was no such place. There were fortified structures at both East Nisbet (shown as castle on Blaeu map) and West Nisbet (shown as house on map, referred to as a castle in Pevsner), but these have always been known as East Nisbet and West Nisbet, neither as Nisbet Castle. There is published architectural evidence, in Pevsner, that Nisbet House incorporates a former pele tower on the same site, but no evidence that stone from East Nisbet was used in its construction.Mark Nesbitt (talk) 21:07, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merge proposal[edit]

Shipsview has suggested these three articles be merged, I have added the merge tags. It seems that Nisbet House is the same building as "Wester Nisbet", or "Nisbet Castle", this appears to be a clear merge. There is also mention of an "Easter Nisbet", which is now "Allenbank", though the castle does not exist. There is an "Allanbank" on the 25k OS map near Allanton. As for the "village", examination of the OS map yields nothing named Nisbet, though there are 4/5 houses and a farm some half mile to the south, labelled "Nisbet Hill". In short, I agree with Shipsview, and supprt merging all three articles under the title Nisbet House. Regards, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 16:35, 12 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Following no comment, Nisbet Castle now merged in. Thanks, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 15:55, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
